Having owned my Skoda Octavia for less than a month, one thing I didnt notice when I bought the car from the dealer was the small stone chip in the windscreen located in the middle behind the rear view mirror. This turned out to be an advisor point on the MOT they did for me before purchasing the car.

The car came with 1 week insurance cover with Skoda Insurance. I called Autoglass to come and repair the windscreen but they would not do so with that particular insurance. Now 3 weeks later and fully insured with Swiftcover, I contact Autoglass again but they will not repair the stone chip without me paying £90 for the repair.

Im disgrutaled im having to pay but my own fault I guess for wanting to repair the stone chip.

That odd, the last time I had a stone chip it was fix for free. This year I had a new windscreen fitted and that only cost me £60. If they stress test the stone chip and it can be repaired, then there should be no charge.

Cowboys.

They don't fix it free - they fix ti and claim off your insurance. So when you renew, your premium goes up.

Windscreen claim won't affect NCB but can affect premium. Saying that, we had 21 screens replaced last year and no increase.

Exactly,
I always wondered what the deal with these people were, the ones who sit in car parks showing free windscreen repair.

Yes, it's free in so far as they bill your insurer. Then you get f cked come renewal time.

To be fair there is probbably a set rate they can take off your insurer.

Does £50 worth of repair actaully make a difference on your premium?

We were with Elephant. Told Autoglass will repair for free. If windscreen needs replacing, you have to pay an excess of £70. told it wouldnt affect premium or NCB. True to the word, our premium went down this year

Guess it could be different for other insurance companies though

Im a windscreen fitter and im concerned at how much you were charged by autoglass for you windscreen repair?!
Most insurance companies will allow you to have it carried out free of charge (occasionally this can affect your premium) but even if you were charged for a cash job £90 is very expensive. You'd be much better off shopping elsewehere as autoglass is one of the most exspensive companies when it comes to cash jobs, sometimes charging 3 or 4 times what others would for a screen!

wait till you see one of the tent jobs in asda / halfords / B&Q car park, ask them how much to repair and when they ask who your insurer is, just tell them you don't have windscreen cover and would like to "pay cash if they can fit you in".

~£10 later you'll have a repaired windscreen, your insurance premium couldn't possibly go up and the chap with the fancy packaged tube of glue gets a beer or three as reward for having to stand in a car park all day tongue out

I had a big chip repaired by Autoglass. The repair is rubbish. It was still plainly visible and now the stuff he put in it has fallen out.

I'd get a new screen but:

a) The last time I had a new screen this chip appeared a week later, sods law
b) As a result of a), I'm now too tight.

Hopefully it'll crack soon and force me into it laugh

Am I the only one who's baffled by the AutoGlass adverts saying 'Mrs Jones left a stone chip in her windscreen and it cracked over a speed bump, leaving her unable to get home to tend to her sick goldfish'.

Did it stop her engine from working?
