To clarify, that is a car capable of hitting 60mph in the six second bracket. Not fast, but just swift enough for daily use. I know it's not the best yard stick for regular driving, but it's one stat that is typically used everywhere...

Would have thought a 335d was in with a shout, seeing as it's the smallest-bodied car with the x35d engine in.

The (2008) 330d will also get to 60 in under 6 seconds and I'd imagine it's more efficient.

The answer is probably some super-light kit car though.

BMW 123d will do 0-60 in 6.7 and will be more economical that a 33xd.

Oh, I miss-understood the point. If the OP meant in under seven seconds, it opens it up to a lot more different cars.

I took "6 second bracket" to meant between 6 and 7 seconds. I may have misunderstood though!

Audi 1.8 20v Quattro Turbo circa 270bhp, 0-60 in 5.5 (timed).

If I drive really sedately I can get 38mpg.

Normal driving is circa 27mpg biggrin

Exactly.

If you want to play that game:

Elise 111S. 0-60 in 5.0 seconds (measured). If I drive really sedately, I can get 50mpg. wink

Unfortunately I normally average about 38mpg.

I thought the K-series powered VVC 111S claimed something like that?

They claim 41, which is realistic (I average around 38 on my back-road commute). You have to be VERY careful to get 45 on anything other than a constant speed drive. At a constant 50mph, it's possible to get over 50, but driving an Elise at a constant 50mph is torturous.

ETA: None of these figures is better than the 123d's claimed 54mpg though. But then you'd have to drive a car that's really ugly AND a diesel!

I wonder if a lightly fettled Honda Insight could be got into the sixes?

Well, if you're going to be pedantic wink

On a downhill stretch of motorway at circa 50mph I can 200mpg smile

How's that!

Alfa 156/147 GTA, 0-60 in 5.9

Comfy good everyday car, sound nice too, a good one can be picked up for <8k for a 156 or <10k a 147.

Terrible mpg, smile
