Hire Car Dilemma

Looks like we are off to Florida in March next year to a friends wedding, so its a good excuse to make it into a bit of a break for the family at the same time.

Plans are to hire a car for the 2 weeks we're there as the wedding is a couple of hours away from Orlando so want something a bit more interesting to drive as we plan to explore a bit as well.

Have an option to hire a Ford Mustang from the travel company for not a lot of cash, only question is will all our stuff fit in the boot when we arrive.

Myself, wife, son (9), daughter (4) and 2 suitcases and a couple of bags.

Don't know how big the boot is on this but am assured by travel company it will all fit...

go for it, the kids can have the luggage on their laps, for the trips to and from the airport rest of the time it won't matter.

Saying that the boot on the Stang is a very good size probably bigger than a Mondeo.

Having hired them both I preferred the Sebring to the rental-spec Mustang

Please be aware that the Mustang comes in different flavours. If it's not specified, you'll get the bum-basic version with cloth seats and a wheezy, small engine. It will be very slow and disappointing.

It's the same as hiring an Impreza, expecting the 2.5 WRX, but getting the 1.5 N/A.

Just spent 10 days in Florida, and had a Hyundai Sonata and have driven the hire spec mustang. The seats in the back are fairly small (my 5'10' brother couldn't sit in the back with his legs out), and the boot isn't that great.

The other thing to remember is that there isn't one good road in Florida. Everything is long straight and dull. Save the money, get a medium car and spend the savings on a theme park or 2. Entrance to Sea World was about $70 per adult!

If they try that walk away, you`ll suddenly find an upgrade available.

One rule I have these days is not to rent American if it's a big holiday.

Last time I rented a 2.5 Volvo S80, big enough for the wife's shopping and with 205BHP it was fast enough too. Full leather, sat nav etc.

Plenty big enough. Problem is the car will probably be a v6, not the V8.

We had a GT coupe for 2 weeks in canada (v8), and where pretty dissapointed with it. Great noise - but handled like a boat, and even over a gentle cruise at 60mph, it struggled to beat 20mpg.

If your children are in the car then you'll be leaving 1 of your suitcases at the airport

When I rented one, there was only 2 of us with 2 pretty standard sized suitcases (Samsonite sized things) and the boot was so small that we couldn't fit both in and so 1 had to sit on the small back seats. Its the shape of the boot, not long enough to have 2 cases lying next to each other and too shallow to stack 1 on top of each other (and close the boot)

BTW I'm referencing the convertible version.
