Personal plate - help please

Sorry I am new to buying personal plates etc but I need a bit of quick help.

Basically: My granda wants to buy a plate for my aunt and wants to know the process. we are going to buy it off the dvla website and apparently when you register for the dvla website it must be in the same name as is going to be on the future certificate.

Basically for example. Mr smith is buying the plate, it is for Mrs Smith (his daughter), should I register on the site as her name?

Plate has to be in exactly the name name as the current V5 for her car.

It doesn't matter who buys the plate, the purchaser then delegates it to someone as a "Nominee"

I just called someone and they said the best way to do it is to buy it and put it on retention. It costs 20 quid more for this apparently.

Hmmm. Not the advice I got when buying one for my Dad...

correct.

I 'own' Mrs T's plate.

Mrs T 'owns' her car.

In fact i've bought quite a few plates for people in the past.

Thanks folks. So when I buy it online they will simply send through V75 form and thats it on retention until the 'nominee' is named?

No need, if it's a present just get your Granddad to put your Aunt as the nominee making sure the name is spelt right (I know, but this is the DVLA we are talking about). Then the cert will get delivered to his house.
If not just put your Aunts name on it. There is no need for retention at all.
She just pops along to her local DVLA office with her docs and it's all sorted. Can be done by post but as I've said it it the DVLA we are talking about.
Just been through the process today, and will be putting my new plate on the car tomorrow. It was dark when I got back.

You have to name the nominee at the time of purchase, or it's another admin fee to change it at a later date.

Thanks for reply. He is going to do it on the phone tomorrow so that if there is any problems he knows what he has said to them.

Don't be too sure about that. If a plate is on a car DVLA will not recognise any person as having any interest in it except the "registered keeper" of the car. i.e. the name on the V5

It's only when a plate is "on retention" that two names get involved. Even then, the "Nominee" has no rights at all until (if ever) a V5 is ever issued to that person's car showing that registration number. Then the previous owner ceases to have any rights.

For this reason if you sell a car with a private plate on it you remain at risk of losing the number unless and until you're either clutching a V5 for your new car with that number on it or you're clutching an officially issued retention document.

That has somewhat confused things. All will be clear tomorrow on sales line I guess. Its a xmas present. Grandad wants to buy plate for aunt. He phones and pays it, says that he wants her as nominee, gives her details, cert gets sent out, she goes to dvla office / posts documents away with v75 or whatever it may be and when they recieve docs then you are ready to go. Is my understanding anyway.

Bingo. If you take all the docs in to a DVLA office it'll get sorted on the spot.
If you sent it off it can take up to 40 days to sort. But 10 mins in the office
and I'm ready to go.
Just need to drag myself outof bed and put the plate on the car.

It's a Grantee rather than a Nominee IIRC but don't try to smoke it.

No that doesn't sound right at all, when you first purchase a plate from the DVLA it comes effectively on retention and you have 1 year to assign it if I recall, there is no extra charge to put it on retention it is bundled in the quoted sales price, same as the first assignment fee of £80 - are you sure he is getting it from DVLA direct and not one of the brokers, they like to add on all and sundry where they can?

The Grantee is the person who 'owns' the plate on a V778 retention certificate. On a V750 (when you purchase a plate), the 'owner' is the Purchaser.

Nominee means the same on both certs - the person who can have the number assigned to their car, providing their name is on the cert obviously.

A grantee is a receiver, the giver would be the grantor, surely.... oh, who cares.
