Just bought a new car, a 2006 730d Se.Made me think about my car history and I'm going soft

1990 Courtney Carlton 12v replaced with Turbo Nissan 200sx
1996 TVR Chimaera (with hood down unless it was raining)
1998 TVR Cerbera (retained Chimp)
2000 Added a Rangie to the fleet
2004 Sold Chimp.
2004 740 Beemer to replace rangie
2005 replaced 740 with New shape Rangie
2005 Lotus Elise 111r
2005+ 5 months sold lotus bought SLK
2007 sold SLK bought 996TT
2007 sold TVR Cerbera
2008 sold Rangie, bought a 730d (today)

So in ten years i have gone from two English sports cars to two German cars.

I've gone from no driver aids to traction control, stability control, ABS air con, heated seats sat nav and telehones.

When ringing dealers my first questions have been

Is it registered before 20th march 06
Does it have phone prep
does it have SAT Nav

I'm old and soft, so from now on please allow me to stay here, but feel free to treat me that that ex member who has always been around, but doesnt quite fit in anymore.

I'm not certain at all that Range Rover ownership is an indicator of auto-enthusiasm.
I had two (a '72 3.5l and a '95 TDi) and they were both awful, awful vehicles.
Why are they so admired on this forum? They stink.

Drive the latest TDv8 and then say it stinks, its a very refined drive and the power delivery is very good. Admitedly the fuel gauges all seem to be faulty but its a very nice environment to travel around in.

I sold the Chimp becuas ethe Cerb was just always first choice.

whether it weas a short, long or just a blast journey the Cerbera's noise, acceleration and poise was unbeatable.

That illusion was shattered however when a colleague left me for dead in the 996TT. So i bought that and the Cerb was never first choice again.

Ok, lets be realistic.

If you drove a '72 Range Rover in the '70's there would have not been another car to compete. It was a sublime vehicle years ahead of any competition. If you were driving it in the '90's or later then of course the cord or velour seats would not compete with a Landcruiser for comfort, but they were worlds apart in technology as well.

The early P38 was a much admired car at the time. The petrol variants especially and road tests at the time lauded the comfort, handling and power. Again, Not a good comparrison if you are back to back testing with a Cayenne, but 10years is a long time in motoring terms.

They are probably admired as they made the mould that all 4x4's and luxury vehicles have been measured against ever since.

They may not be as perfect as an Audi or a Toyota, but from a '72 to a 08 you know you are in a Rangie.

Before I had a kid it was a Clio 172 and 0-60 times.

It's now a Bora diesel and 50mpg.
