Think I've read once or twice the Golf GTI tends to make more power than VW quoted. So maybe theres not much in it anyway. I'm sure some bellend will perk up and say the ST driver was'nt trying soon wink

I have to admit my mate has a GTI and it feels particularly frisky for 200bhp, especially once up and running at speed.

I've not been in an ST though so couldn't make a comparison between the two.

hehe Love the OP's interpretation of speed cameras requiring you to accelerate afterwards smile

Maybe the VW power delivery is more linear, so responds better to being nailed? Before i had my ST mapped, i thought the power quite poor higher up the rev range, so a bit of short shifting helps. Since the remap a lot of short shifting helps!

How do you know he was 'nailing it'? Could you see his gear lever or his throttle pedal?

Someone recently posted this website where they dyno test production cars to see what they really produce:

http://www.rri.se/index.php?DN=29&List=A-B

For the Focus ST is shows it should put out 226bhp and 236lb-ft of torque and the one they tested actually puts out 217bhp and 241 lb-ft of torque. Likewise the Golf GTi should put out 197bhp and 207lb-ft and the test one actually put out 192bhp and 213lb-ft of torque.

Of course individual cars vary, but this Golf certainly doesn't exceed VW's claims.

Except it makes more torque, no?

Perhaps the ST was carrying weight, passengers/luggage ?
Maybe it was a lookalike or the driver wasn't keen on going too mental?
Or your Golf may just be quicker!

The ST's a heavy beast, remember when EVO magazine got one on their scales? It was well over the published weight.

If it was a simple 3rd gear race from 50 to 70, then the ST's torque should be the winning factor, so something sounds odd. If it was through the gears, then he could have held his revs for too long or poor gear change etc, you just don't know!

Interestingly the Golf GTi engine is pretty consistent in power and torque output whether it's in an Audi, VW, Skoda or Seat. None manage to exceed the claimed figures for power but a couple generate a bit more torque. The one in the Seat Leon FR did best on power, the ones fitted to Audi's the worst. Still, one car isn't a huge sample.

Could it be to do with different gearing? Perhaps from 50mph in the ST it is off boost where the Golf is boosting

Well I've got a std Gti,and my bro has got a std Focus ST 3.

When I drove my bro's ST it was brand new and didn't feel that quick. My GTi has 4k on the clock and when I bought it and it felt quicker.

He lives some way from me, but when we can we will do some tests - I'll get back to you.... wink

The ST is over 100kg heavier than a MkV GTI, so that'll explain quite a lot of it. (book figures)

Perhaps the ST was an unmarked police car - all the kit they carry in the boot would've slowed them down. You'll know for sure within 14 days. . . . . . . . whistle
