... sneak out of the house for a DRIVE without being noticed?

I reckon I could but as I've just metabolised some cheap red wine, I probably ought not.

Could you?

Wouldn't need to sneek... I'd simply leave a note on the kitchen table and make sure I locked the doors when I left.

Unless one of the ankle biters woke up, I doubt "She who must be obeyed" would be any the wiser.

However, after consuming reasonable quantities of lager and the fact it's baltic outside, I think I'll stay put tonight!! biggrin

moving the alcohol aspects to one side for the moment (i.e. was not drinking), if I couldn't sleep I would get up, get dressed and go for a hoon. Talking around 3am in the morning, the roads would be empty all the traffic light junctions change as you approach in your favour and you can soon find yourself on some good stretches, for me it would be 7 mile lane in Kent. cloud9

I would try to get the wife to smoke me a kipper as I would be back for breakfast but sadly to this day has never obliged... frown

I did this once. Brilliant reminder. I was soooo bored with TV and couldn't sleep (situation normal for me) so I pushed the Caterham out of the garage and onto the road. I live on a shallow hill but it's steep enough to get the car rolling. I didn't ignite the afterburner until I was a decent distance from home and stayed out for a good hour.

Getting back home was a bit of a pain because I'd obviously have to drive it back up the hill, and it was now 3:15 in the morning. However because there was basically no-one on the road I managed to take the corner into my road wide, thus keeping the speed up in a very high gear, then I simply cut the ignition at about 50mph halfway up my road and coasted onto the drive.

God..!! I had forgotten that night. driving

I started the thread because I fancied doing it tonight in my (comparitvely) boring Scooby, but I'm the wrong side of legal now frown . I had genuinely forgotten about that Caterham night.

Mind you, even that wasn't unprecedented. After I first started at work I bought a GSi 4X4 Cavalier off a friend. As a 24yo the 150bhp, even in such a heavy car, was amazing. I loved that car.

Anyway, after a night in the pub (not drinking as I was driving) I announced my total boredom at having to go home after last orders, so 4 of us decided to take off somewhere. We ended up on the beach in Tal-y-bont, North Wales. It's a good 2 1/2 hour drive from the Midlands and it was in driving, freezing rain. We got out onto the stones separating the beach from the road for enough time to smoke a single cigarette before getting back in (freezing and wet) to drive home.

Different situation though as I lived alone then. Sneaking out from under the nose of my family (wife, 2 young kids and wife's aunt living with us to help with the 6 month old baby) is a different matter altogether.

Might try it tomorrow night though. evil

LOL, I've never had to go to those lengths, normally I can "creep" the car off the drive without too much issues (or worst case, early summer mornings, just give it some beans, by the time she realises, I am down the road aways and therefore not a problem (until I get home!)).

In the past, I have often said to wifey, "I am going for a drive" as she knows I am bored with what she is watching on telly and it works for both of us if I am out enjoying myself and likewise she can chill out in front of the telly.

Had a friend, whose approach to this was to have a row with his partner, purely so he could go for a hoon..., he would set up a row on purpose, so he could slope off on the pretext of angry husband, when in actual fact he wanted to massage his car's engine on the twisties. Personally always seemed far too involved to me, but thats how he played it.

Ah, the Caterham and Cerbera I used to have had the same problem. And you can never be sure when the urge is going to take you, so you can't take pre-emptive action and park the car that distance from home.

Luckily, as I said, I live on a hill which affords me a quiet escape. What you need to do is have a post-it note in your car reminding you to question whether or not **tonight** is going to be one of those nights, and to take a "pre-emptive parking decision" (I'm trademarking that phrase). biggrin

A Monaro is definitely the sort of car I'd be sitting at home in the early hours wishing I could go and exercise.

Haven't done it lately, but when the summer breaks, I might be getting up very early, going out in (hopefully) the battlecruiser and going for a drive to some remote spot with my camera and catching the early dawn magic yes
