Essex fears over road pricing trials
By Sinead Holland
ESSEX County Council is calling for an urgent meeting to discuss the Government's road pricing trials.

Some reports have highlighted the possibility of so-called "spy in the sky" tests, with Essex named as one of the areas for a pilot "pay as you drive" scheme.

However as the Observer revealed last week, the Department of Transport dismissed claims that any particular location had yet been chosen. It says volunteer driver will take part.

Nevertheless, cabinet member for highways and transportation Councillor Norman Hume has written to the Roads Minister Paul Clark asking him to clarify.

Cllr Hume said: "I would have significant concerns about any possible trials taking place in Essex. I have written to the minister to request an urgent meeting on this matter. We cannot support something that would potentially unfairly penalise motorists in this way.

"I have also asked for more information on the companies short-listed to deliver future programmes. Furthermore I would like to understand how the Government intends to consult local authorities on the use of roads in their area. Local decisions affecting local residents should be taken by their locally elected representatives.

"It is important that the government also understands that a large part of Essex is rural, and for many residents the only option is to use their car to carry out their normal, everyday activities."

The root of the problem is that all the Income Tax in the UK goes towards the Benefit System.

So everything else, including the banks bailouts has to come from indirect taxation.

I was thinking the same thing; the banking bailout will accelerate all those 'on the shelf/pending' taxation schemes. We are in for an onslaught. I was rather hoping that the government's immigration policy of importing tax paying workers would would generate a tidy sum to help the war chest...

Whether people want it or not is completely irrelevant.

The money has to come from somewhere and a Labour government, especially this one, wont ever inconvenience the spongers. If they did, who would vote for them?

The government and the EU are dying to find a use for EU/UK paid for GPS Galileo satellite system.
I'm sure this is just one of many reasons to keep tabs on all the citizens of the EU then charge them for the privilege.

And we have all contributed to the development of this by the sheer number of SatNav systems we have purchased!

Have a great business idea - joe public pay through the nose to help develop it! Don't say that this wasn't on the cards since the beginning of SatNav technology!

Double whammy!!

No, that was/is a bit of a washout.

I should have made my post clearer - satnav technology was going in this direction from the start. In the future your vehicle speed will be controlled by such a GPS type mapping system.

Throw the crappy things away then. I have seen more near-misses from morons gawping at satnavs stuck to the inside of their windows instead of readin the road/ & road signs than I care to count.

Wait a sec. It can't be true. We had an e-petition! The government wouldn't ignore an e-petition, would they? I know, how about a go slow drive through Colchester city centre.

hehe

If any of us catch a local politician supporting road pricing we must destroy their reputation and career without hesitation.

They are the enemy.

Don't get me wrong. I hate this idea, but......

See it for the government's perspective. They want to be able to tax you on the basis of your social standing. There is almost no better way to do this than to know where you go.

The idea of taxation that robs the rich and gives to the poor is no bad thing IMO. The problems comes from the idea that by doing that you can maximise taxation, to the greatest possible extent. That is to say everybody winces, rich and poor alike.

With that end in mind, the government which feeds on the tax proceeds, is able to create it's own socio-economic group. That group is those who might (but often don't) add value to the economy, and live in an artificial economic environment, slap bang in the middle of rich and poor.

In it's simplest form taxation can be a huge force for good within a nation state. I however think that road pricing is a really bad idea. Not because it's a bad way to tax people, but because I think it's going to be used as a way to tax everybody to the maximum possible extent.

I don't think I could trust any government to behave in a way that would make it work satisfactorily (as it could) for everyone.

Motorists get hacked off with the government anyways, so lets add
Higher fuel prices
Economic down turn
Cars worth fook all
People loosing there jobs
Trying to impose new tax bands

Does the government not realise, how much people are seriously fked off with them?
Do they not know they are on a sticky whicket.

Best way to solve a problem like this, let them impose it, then no one go to work for a few days, I mean no one, as UK residents, the people who should run this country, the people who should have the say in what goes on, should become United, once again and tell this goverment, to fk off! We should be calling the shots, they work for us, not the other way around, the UK citizens, should bring this country to its knees.

Look around, people are starting to really not give a st anymore, we are all bored of the PC bullst, all tired of Brown and his stupid government imposing st laws etc on us, People are caring less and less these days, and it will be a very rude awakening for the government, when it goes tits up

Gotta love the UK at times...

I pay road tax to drive my car (which i bought with my tax-deducted money), then pay fuel tax to power my car. I drive to work to make money, which i pay tax on.

So the only bit of the day that doesn't cost me tax, is the drive, and that is about to go too...

The Government have had enough indication about how much the public don't want to be spied upon everywhere they drive - remember the online 1.5 million (and climbing) signature petition against the idea? Democracy has nothing to do with it. Be careful who you vote for next time.

Actually, I'm beginning to think that the current labour government cannot lose, not in the long term anyway. Brown is so keen to force policies through quickly because it is so rare that any government ever goes back on a policy. Lets face it, what Boris is doing right now is only big news because he is keeping his word. So if they are voted out at the next election, the next government will be hamstrung by the debt Labour have created, and Labour will feed off this, create some spin and go back into power the next time round, with policies like road pricing still intact. And if for some reason they are not voted out, then he has a headstart on his next round of taxation and wasting public money.
