Auction Report #10: Manheim Colchester 15 January 09
Discussion
Hi all.
Does anyone actually read the first bit, or do you all just scroll straight to the pretty pictures?
I made a rather key observation today. At Tuesday's auction, the crowd was seriously swollen by buyers from main dealers of all persuasions. And the cars all made top money; often well in excess of book trade.
This morning, the buyers were almost entirely independent trade and, once again, we were back to a large proportion of the cars failing to make reserve. Then, when the Mercedes element of the sale started, buyers from several MB dealer groups turned up, and just about every car met or exceeded reserve.
So, the dealer groups seem to desperate for secondhand stock and are willing to pay whatever it takes for 'ready-to-retail' quality cars, but the independent sector clearly remains somewhat more circumspect about what they are buying and are still relying on the bargains to surface.
Coming up soon
Don't forget the next Prestige Sale on Tuesday 10th February. Would be great to see some of you there if you can spare the time.
The cars are starting to arrive already and I'll be including some taster pics to whet your appetites!
How rare is this? Could be sitting on your drive in less than 4 weeks time!
MG XPower SV

Many thanks to WhiteChief for the pic of the MG!
A smart curvy German... (no, not me in a bikini!)

A lanky Italian...

So, onto today's results. As I knew that there'd be a batch of Mercs, I thought I'd start with some really general stock; the sort of stuff many of us might end driving on a day-to-day basis, while our P&J waits for the weekend.
Have also included some Smarts and Mitsubishi 4x4s following recent posts in GG.
To save repeated questions, car prices are marked as:
SOLD - you pay this price plus a buyer's premium of 4-5%.
Provisional - you are the highest bidder but haven't met the reserve. Manheim will try and broker a deal between you an the vendor (either you move up or the vendor moves down). You are bound to buy the car if the vendor moves his reserve down to your bid, but are not bound to offer any extra. (Plus buyer's premium as before)
Submit Highest Bid (SMB) - The vendor has not left a reserve but has asked the auction house to submit the highest bid to him for his consideration. You are bound to buy the car if your highest bid is accepted. (Plus buyer's premium as before)

re. your observation - MD mark-up on the sale of new cars is very small, because the manufacturers are screwing them down, and selling (new-car) targets are unreal.
MDs are now buying up the 2nd-hand stock because
1) they make more mark-up
2) being cheaper to start with they are easier to sell

A question from someone who's planning on going to an auction once my Exige is gone;
Let's say I bid on something at £10k, but the reserve is £12k. so it's provisional. How long does the seller have to either go down to my £10k bid or for me to negotiate up?
I ask because, let's say I bid on something that doesn't meet the reserve; because it hasn't, I might want the next car that comes along and so want to know I'm able to bid without having to buy two cars (if you see what I mean?)
Thanks
PS: Great report as usual, thanks for effort

i assume private sale on the evo 8 means just that? a punter putting his own car through or is it a trader trying to shift unwanted stock? is it the 280bhp model?
many thanks again for the update, i was at Manheim yesterday in Washington (tyne and wear), there was car that would have interested you guys, a 1 year old 335cd, 3.5k on the clock, went for 18 grand

The auction house will talk to the vendor and let them know the bid. They may stick to their guns, sell you the car or be prepared to have a deal.Let's say I bid on something at £10k, but the reserve is £12k. so it's provisional. Unfortunately there is no time limit set upon them to do it but if you keep hassling the guys at the desk they will try and chase it up for you whilst the auction is still going. However, there have been many times when I have had to leave only to have it accepted and come back the next day.
It is also a pain that you could go on a Monday and bid that amount and have no joy, go back the following week and they may sell it to you. Depends on the vendor, time of the month, distance from reserve etc etc.

I have faced that very situation of liking two cars rolling quite close to each other. The simple answer is that, without a trade account, you need to make up your mind in advance about which one you want.Let's say I bid on something at £10k, but the reserve is £12k. so it's provisional. How long does the seller have to either go down to my £10k bid or for me to negotiate up?

Upon provisionally winning a lot, you still have to pay the £500 deposit (cash or debit card). Responses take from 1-4 hours; maybe they'll come down, maybe they'll try and negotiate, maybe they'll stick firm on their reserve. No way of calling it. And your deposit is kept until it's settled one way or another.
A £10k bid will not be provisional against a £12k reserve car. An £11,600 bid would be.

Thanks for answer!Interesting last line though - so when my bid is deemed the highest, does the auctioneer state at that very point whether it's provisional or not?
And I can't believe I'm asking this but I genuinely don't know the answer; I assume reserves are not known prior to auction, only after?

Out of interest, did you note what the bread and butter was making?
Erm... I had some toast before the sale. Was proper cheap. Tea was a bit strong
I thought I had included more bread and butter cars today
Mercs are just taxis and agricultural vehicles, right? To be honest, I tend to wander away from the streams of Fiestas and Peugeot 207s (though I did include one^^). All I did notice was that the hammers weren't dropping very much today.
Following some feedback on these threads, I'm popping back this evening for the cheap 'n' cheerful auction; see what's about for pocket money. Will post some results later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Happened quite a lot today!
Reserves are never disclosed, unless you are the provisional winning bidder.
