I have followed a slightly unconventional route to car heaven and have not owned many cars most people my age (fifties) might have done. Anyone care to guess what they were, based on a few clues. I will provde the engine configuration as a minimum, plus a few asides. The list is in the order I have owned them and the year is when I changed, not when the car was new.
1. 1975 Flat four
2. 1978 Flat four - different make to 1
3. 1979 Flat four - different make to 1 and 2
4. 1980 Straight four - same make as 1 but with "modern" look
5. 1980 Straight four - a completely different direction for me
6. 1981 Flat four - different to 2 and 3 but related to 1
7. 1983 Straight four - same make as 6 but not quite iconic, in fact rather dull
8. 1984 Straight five - if only but not quite
9. 1986 Straight four - same make as 7 and an icon
10.1989 Straight four - same make as 8 and tedious as hell - the fives weren't a lot better
11.1991 Straight four - same make as 9 but with a new shape and added puff
12.1996 Flat six - kind of related to 1 and the worst car I ever owned
13.1998 Straight four - same make as 12 but no relation to 1
14.2002 Flat six - a definite improvement over 12
15.2007 Flat six - an absolute icon but boring as hell
16.2008 Flat six - a link all the way back to 12 not shared by the rest of the range
Give it a go..............
1. 1975 Flat four

How many cars have had a flat 4 fitted and would be likely to be a first car? Short of the OP saying he's owned a Karman Gear(sp) (which I'm not 100% they aren't) how far can you go beyond beetle and VW camper van before you have to resort to Google!Edit to add, Scooby's don't count as i don't think they were around in the '70's

Further edit to add, with Google i am reminded of the Italian lot
