As some of you may know, my site was suspended earlier this week due to bandwidth volumes getting a little high (100Gb per day), mainly as a result of me putting up the Top Gear and 5th Gear reviews.

After discussion with the hosting company, they are (naturally) reluctant to reactivate my domain with the current setup (ie. 100s of people downloading big video files). They are suggesting I take one of their business offerings and host my site on its own server, something which will no doubt cost megabucks, when I'm only really doing this for fun.

So......is anyone willing to offer to host my site and provide a reasonable amount of bandwidth.

Regardless of what I do, I will get the site back up, but will limit downloads to folks I recognise through this forum, rather than having hundreds of other sites and thousands of spotty teenagers and most of South Korea downloading the videos. It would be great to be able to have anybody downloading anything, but that is just not viable anymore, so I have to pick and choose who can get the vids.

LB (sad git with no website)

I will see what dieselnut has available, he hosts my two sites along with his own, so he may be able to sort something out for you

Yup. 'fraid so.

Can't fault them, they've provided an excellent service, until they cut me off. They may re-instate things if I can prove I can manage the bandwidth utilisation better. But I don't think they're that bothered.

It might sound silly but how about creating more than one site?
Have x amount of sites over x amount of providers, each site would contain certain things e.g. site 1 would have everything TVR, site 2 all top gear stuff site 3 all 5th gear vids. Each site would be linked to each other with a simply hyperlink.

Or is that too much work?

100GB a day! phew.

It was a one off....sort of. The usual amount prior to Top Gear and 5th Gear was around 1-2Gb per day.

But on Monday, Korea (several hundred Koreans) decided to download Surrey Run 4 (100Mb). Strange.

When restored, I need to think of a decent way of controlling downloads better.

A simple and cheap way would be to require a password for downloads which you include in your PH profile .

Normally I'd jump in here and offer up our server - but that kind of bandwidth will kill us (and our clients which is perhaps more of a problem...)

However, I can put you in touch with some good hosting providers - let me know if you want details.

Have you spoken to Carrenza (who host PH) - perhaps they might be able to "do a deal"??

The 100Gb was a one off that I cannot allow to happen again. I'm guessing that I would probably require <5Gb per day on popular days, with some new controls in place.

As regards costs, at present they are excellent, costing me £70 per year for hosting, which because its only for fun, I am happy to pay.

I'd be happy to host whatever my ISP allows plus what I need for my website but it's not likely to be more than about 10smegs.

Thinking out loud after several pints, but bear with me:
Couldn't you use a bandwidth protection program to allow your files to only be accessed from certain domains, such as PH ? Dependent on what your server is something like GuardMe should do the job ? Granted it'll cost you, but not as much as a commercial website.

I'll have a dig around and see if i can find any decent deals. Intersting Fasthosts suggesting a dedicated server when the bandwidth limit for the top one it 20g per month!
