NSL to Change to 50mph?

Road speed limit cut to 50mph
THE government is to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on most of Britain’s roads, enforced by a new generation of average speed cameras.
The reduction , to be imposed as early as next year, will affect two thirds of the country’s road network. Drivers will still be able to reach 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60mph on the safest A roads.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the roads minister, defended the plan, which will be the most dramatic cut since 1978, when the national speed limit was reduced from 70mph to 60mph.
“There will be some in the driving lobby who think this is a further attack and a restriction on people’s freedom,” he said. “But when you compare that to the fact we are killing 3,000 people a year on our roads, it would be irresponsible not to do something about it. I’m sure that the vast majority of motorists would support the proposals.”

If they get that through before they lose the election though I will be surprised.
Ditto, Read; Camera revenue slowing down and roads even safer than they were, how we going to maintain revenue? Ah that's it lower the limit - genius - NOT!!! Time to address the other 94% of causes of accidents I think, grasp the nettle, you know you can, you say you want to make a difference so go on then...............................

We are killing 3000 people a year on our roads? Au contraire, my good man, they are killing themselves and they shall continue to do so until we can accurately identify who these morons are.I look forward to reading 2011's road death figures.
Hang on years ago when everyone was riding around in something with brakes like bottle tops, we could go 70mph, then, we got disk brakes and ABS and it came down to 60mph, now we have some carbon ceramic (sp)brakes and it drops to 50mph? I there for declare we go back to bottle top brakes

FFS, a road can not be dangerous, a road is just a strip of tarmac, its the idiots driving on them that can be dangerouswe should be putting speed limits up, not down, cars have improved massivly since the speed limits were set
when the 70 limit on motorways was introduced in December 1965, the cars werent designed for long distances at speed, now they are
really boils my blood this
doug
I really fail to see what this will do. Isn't the chance of having a fatal accident at 50 nearly the same as it is at 60? And how will they decide the "safest" bit? I live out in the sticks, and if the silly w
kers try putting up a network of SPECS camera round my way, the f
king things are getting cut down. Most of Oxfordshire has a 50 NSL now, and all it does is stop you overtaking the trucks.

Drum brakes and cross ply tyres, thats the only way to go, make things interesting at much lower speeds although I suspect the death toll might rise again............Ncap 5 stars my Ass!!
. how do they work out these nsl, there is a road close to me that is nsl and it has junctions and a single track road so limited to 60 mph,i dont find it safe to go above 50 mph here, strangely there is never any speed cameras here, just outside Preston there is a dual carriage way straight as a die no junctions,no pedestrians ,no schools,no houses and its reduced to a 50 mph limit and the "safety van" is there everyday for approx 5 hours a day,i wouder why ? it was in the local paper a few months ago,it was called the "golden mile" !

You've got that wrong. Many years ago there was no speed limit on the motorway. Car technology improved continually from the early years but eventually a 70mph motorway limit was set. More recently, with the introduction of safety features such as airbags and ABS, limits have often been re-banded downwards from 70mph to 60mph, or even from 70mph to 50mph. This new step simply follows that trend by re-classifying all NSL country roads from 60mph to 50mph.
. RIP enjoying cars and motoring.
