I wonder if any of the PH masses can help me sort out a niggling audio problem with my car?

I'm fed up of lugging around dozens of CDs in the car and it being a right pain to the change album that I'm listening to, so would like a half decent head unit that can play MP3s from either an SD card (preferable) or USB drive via a front USB slot.

The key is though that I want to be able to scroll through the albums and tracks on the external memory easily so it's more like an MP3 player than a CD player with the ability to play MP3s, if you see what I mean.

I don't want to use an ipod or other external MP3 through the headunit as it's too fussy. I want it all in one place with only one unit to worry about.

I'd also consider a head unit with an internal disk drive if they weren't too expensive (<£300) and offered ease of use.

In terms of storage space if that information is useful, around 30 albums would be good, but obviously the more, the better. Oh, and it must be single DIN.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered. smile

I went for one with Aux and USB input.
Then I have the option of 2 types of connection for MP3 players via the stereo, or just slot in a USB memory stick.

I have a Blaupunkt head unit which reads of a HDD connected via a USB its ok but scrolling through titles it a pain.

Why not just get on of these if you already have an ipod.

That's not far off what I'm after, but I'd have concerns about obsolescence and the apparent lack of a radio tuner?

Also, a named brand would be nice to avoid the normal concerns about warranty, longevity etc.

I thought that I just must be looking in the wrong places, but it seems there is no current head unit that fits my requirements. Strange as you'd think more people would be interested.

I know Pioneer are launching a head unit with an SD at the moment, but it looks very basic.

JVC went through a big stage of having SD card stereos but it sort of fell on it's arse due to iPods. A good stereo however with a USB slot on the front and a AUX is the Sony MEX-BT3600U it also has bluetooth as well.

Looks like I may just have to bodge it.

I suppose a head unit with a decent interface and a rear USB port would keep the front looking tidy and I could route the rear USB to the glove box and use a USB card adaptor or memory stick to have the equivalent of an SD card slot in the head unit, but it's a lot of faff for something that you (or seemingly I) would expect some of the higher end stereos to have built in.

So, can anyone recommend a single DIN head unit, from a recognised brand, in the <£300 range, with a fast interface via USB, possibly with a nice screen?

Look down the page it does have a tuner.

My missus has a similar model in her car now for 13 months now problem and great value, sounds good as well.

Why don't you go down to your local specialist and try them out.

You can get headunits where the detachable fascia can be connected directly to a computer, and you can store tracks on a hard drive on the unit itself! That would be the way i would go, im fairly sure sony make/made one. If you want a USB one, i know JVC went through a stage where most of their units had USB connections.
