If they break the law and drive whilst drunk, what makes you think they won't break the law and drive without a licence?

You do know that a lot of people that are disqualified continue to drive don't you?

A lot of people who are caught drink driving have made a genuine error which they will never repeat.
The rest will carry on driving even if disqualified.

Probably generalised a bit too much but not far off...

Can't support that as almost everyone has driven the morning after a night out and could well have been over the limit.

It's far too fine a line between being over and being OK for 'next morning' offences, that it's just not something that could be considered fair and reasonable.

For a one off mistake? Probably cost society more than it gains.

For a serial offender? Won't make a blind bit of difference.

Too vague - what is 'drunk' ? Over the limit or totally w*nkered ?

As always. It depends. On a lot of factors. But as mentioned they'll simply drive anyway if you ban them for life. Plus you dont want to stop them earning money and becoming a drain on society for ever. But you do want them to pay.

So. How about the current bans plus a weeks community service every year for a decade.

Don't some European countries have a rule where if you're slightly over, you get a hefty fine and points, but if you're well over they give you a long ban and a very hefty fine?

Sounds like the ideal solution to me.

Exactly, it winds me up watching these police programs where they arrest a banned driver for being on the road only for their punishment to be a further ban.

Drink drivers should be named and shamed. Maybe posters on buses with the offenders mugshot. I know of a prick that has been banned 3 times. I think he is doing a 10 year ban at the moment, but I have been told he is still driving.

Most people would be horrified and ashamed of being caught drink driving, but there are also alot of people that have no respect for the law and dont give a damn. With the mamby pamby legal system that we have what else should we expect.

I don't support a lifetime ban for a first drunk drive offence but I would for a second offence within ten years of the first.

Being drunk the morning after is no excuse - if you've got to drive the next day, don't drink the night before and likewise the fact that some disqualified drivers still drive is no reason not to ban them.

Drinking alcohol is not mandatory. If there is any chance you will need to drive, simply don't drink.

I've been over the limit on a home breathalyser (I bought to check just for morning after driving) at 5pm the day after.

Mind you, that was one hell of a party.

Anyone who can say that they've never (even in their younger years) driven the morning after while still over the limit is either deluding themselves or teetotal.
