Now I want to get this clear I am not an encyclopedia of car knowledge, however I think I am fairly knowledgable about cars and if I dont know something about cars then I wont bullst my way through I will simply say that I dont know.

However recently I have had several conversations with people that think they know everything about car's yet in reality they really dont know what they are talking about and talk absolute crap and expect me to believe it. Now normally I would let it go over my head as I cant really be bothered to argue but its started to really annoy me so I have started arguing back however it makes me feel like an utter geek even if I do prove that they are talking trash.

By the way im talking about the know it all's that think they know everything not the people that just want a conversation and actually admit to not knowing much.

On a positive note how nice is it to talk to somebody else that is on the same wavelength and is very knowledgable. I have a colleague that is a PHer and we always have great conversations about cars, racing etc.

What do you do in similar situations and has anybody got any funny stories told by these cretins?

This annoys me too. Little things like a work colleague insisting his Saxo VTR has 120 bhp as standard.

'No mate, that's the VTS you're thinking of, the VTRs were all 90 bhp with a rare few being 100.'

'Nah everyone knows the R is better than the S, just like the Hondas yeah?'

Like the bloke I overheard talking about his new Mini Cooper with it's 2ltr supercharged engine. Didn't even know what his own car had under the bonnet.

A friend of mine said a Lambo Reventon does '500mph'

i said

'No it only does around 210, 500 is close to speed of sound'

he said

'You have to put it the right gear and push the engine really hard'

I just ended the conversation there

I know a guy who had his Golf 1.8T remapped to a 2.0......

And another who was convinced that merely fitting an aftermarket ECU would take his stock Impreza to 740hp, because he'd seen one with the same ECU in a magazine make that power, and had neglected to notice all the other mods.

On a similar note, but not from somebody who pretends to know about cars, I was hugely irritated when an ex girlfriend told me she had called her MINI One 'Henry' after Henry Cooper.

You always seem to get a lot more of this on MOnday mornings after Top Gear has been on with them all spouting whatever half truth Clarkson had uttered the previous evening. One that sticks in my mind was when he tested the Vectra VXR and when talking about its 160ish top speed stated that it was faster than an M5, obviously omitting the fact the M5 was limited to 155.

The next morning some cocktard in my then office who had a lesser Vectra was very pleased to tell everyone that Vectras are faster than BMW M5s "because Clarkson said so".

The guy telling me about the BMW M8 -

Guy: "it does 288 MPH, faster than a Veyron!"

Me: No it doesnt, and its a concept from several years ago that never went anywhere

Guy: "No, its already in production"

There are, in all subjects you can think of, people who will argue black is white and that they know X, Y or Z, despite having no clue at all.

It's just the way some people are, for some reason the "I don't know" is akin to "I want to rape and murder your wife"...

Apparently... there is an Audi RS3 model, and it's being used operationally as a police vehicle in some forces.

Apparently...

It'd be nice if the guy's story was true

It's when people hear something that isn't definite and pass it off as absolute fact that annoys me.

I work with two girls, who sell cars and lots of them might I add, she says this to her customers that ask about the MINI engine variants.

"There is the mini one, which is an entry level car, and is a 1.4" that's fine, factually correct.

"Then there is the cooper which is a 1.6" fine, I suppose.

"Then the cooper-s which is a 1.6 but more like a 1.8" no darling its a 1.6 turbo, its nothing like an n/a anything.

It is to a pedant like me Daniel. I cannot let something lye, even if I keep my gob shut and it could result in a sale, I just can't.

The other day infact

"This new boot is smaller than the old one (new mini convertible)"
"Its actually a decent size bigger, with better accessibility due to the larger hinge system on the hood"
"Its defiantly smaller, my husband wouldn't fit his clubs in there"
"if you can get them in the current boot, then you will be fine with this, its bigger"
"I don't think it is"
"(pointing in the manual) its bigger it has x more litres than the old one its bigger"
"Hmm I'm not sure"
"I just showed you, its bigger 100%, the brochure isn't wrong"

She pulled a face and made her excuses.

I just get fed up with people with ccensoredp cars that go on about how fast they are when they are clearly not.

I had an argument with a couple on here, one was a mod, about a particular manufacturer that has a dowdy reputation and they refused, even with evidence, to accept one of their 'sportier' models was any different to the rest of the range. I think it's when the blinkers come on and the irrefutable belief that they are right even when faced with fact that gets me.......that and the inevitable PH tradition of polarizing an argument

In my youth I had an old and rare Japanese motorbike. There was a racing section in the handbook which I read with interest. One section stated there were cold sparkplugs for use in racing.

I asked my neighbour about these cold sparkplugs for racing. Rather than admit he had no idea he told me (assumedly making it up on the spot) that you use the cold plugs to start the engine when it's cold and once it's warmed up you put the other plugs in.

It was many years later I learned that he was talking utter rubbish. I won't even bother with his story about 'alcohol cams'.
Several (but old) race engine required "starting" plugs, which are then replaced with race plugs.
Modern technolgy has pretty much made changing plugs to start the engine obsolete.
