This is a game I'm playing with my son, but we're coming unstuck on some of the letters. Here are the rules:

  • Money is no object and fuel consumption is of no concern.
  • You are populating your 26-space fantasy garage alphabetically.
  • You are only allowed 1 car per letter BY MANUFACTURER.
  • You have to cover as many types and niches of cars as you can, to cover all your motoring needs, so you can't choose all supercars.
  • The definition of 'car' is broad, rather than narrow. Vans? Pick-up Trucks? Snowmobiles? No problem!
  • The cars have to be current, i.e. in production now.
  • The cars have to be road-legal.
  • The cars have to be ones you would be prepared to be seen in. Even if they were still available, would you really drive an Oldsmobile?
How do you resolve the wealth of choice you face on some letters? A, for instance: Ariel Atom? Audi R8? Aston Martin DBS?

Which interesting cars can you choose to cover the less populated letters? X, Y and Z, for instance. Zonda is not a manufacturer...

Here's my first attempt, and the letters we're getting stuck on:

Letter Car (Type/Niche)

A Ariel Atom (Sunday Morning B-Road Blaster)
B Bentley Azure (Luxury Boulevard Cruiser)
C Chrysler Voyager (Large MPV)
D Dodge Ram (Large Truck)
E ?
F Ford Focus RS (Daily Hatchback)
G Ginetta
H HSV Tourer R8 (Fast Estate)
I Isuzu Rodeo (Medium Truck)
J Jaguar XFR (Continent Crossing GT)
K Koeniggsegg (Hypercar)
L Land Rover Defender (Go Anywhere 4x4 / Towcar)
M Mercedes Vito (Capacious Household Goods Transport)
N Nissan GTR (Sportscar 1)
O ?
P Porsche 911 (Sportscar 2)
Q Quadzilla (Quadbike)
R Rolls Royce Phantom (Oligarchic Luxury Statement)
S Skoda Roomster (Quirky Small Family Car)
T Toyota Aygo (Urban Runabout)
U Ultima GTR (Le Mans Refugee)
V Volkswagen Phaeton (Understated Executive 4-door Saloon)
W Westfield Sei (Open-Air 7-Type)
X ?
Y ?
Z ?

No, that can't be right - no Lotus, no Lamborghini...

You have a go!

For "E", I'd say the Eagle E-type - a conversion of the E-type to use modern running gear while maintaining the looks of the original.

O - Opel Manta 400 Grp B. For when you want to get your feet muddy in the forest.
Y - Yugo for when you want to get lashed and leave your car in a rough part of town.

And you can have an Opel Speedster if you want a way to shoehorn a Lotus in without losing your Landy.

How about an Opel? Although not sure I'd want any of their cars because they don't make the Opel VX220 anymore and the VXR8 is Vauxhall, not Opel frown

Good suggestion. I'll have to have a look at their range.

No, Sorry. The thunderous Opel Manta 400 doesn't qualify on one count and the Yugo doesn't qualify on two counts:
  • The cars have to be current, i.e. in production now.
  • The cars have to be ones you would be prepared to be seen in.

Don't feel inspired to do much more work today so this ought to pass the time nicely:

A - Alfa 33 Stradale - for looks alone
B - Bugatti veyron - because it has 1000bhp, I don't even like them much...
C - Caterham R500 - track fun
D - Delorean - to take me back to 1965
E - Eletrica electric car - I'd never use it but it fills two niches, electric and begins with E!
F - Ford F650 - for huge comedy value
G - Ginetta something
H - Holden Monaro - quick and stealthy(ish) 4 seater
I - Isuzu something, don't care but it covers I
J - Jensen interceptor - because the name is amazing
K - KTM X-bow - because it looks ridiculous and I've already got a hypercar so don't need a koeneingiseggi
L - Land rover range rover sport - for pimping about on the school run
M - Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss - for top down awesomeness
N - Nissan R34 GT-R - for tuning malarky
O - Opel something - because it begins with O
P - Porsche 944 Turbo - because they great and most porsches (911s/cayennes/boxsters) are boring or gay
Q - Quadzilla - erm for off road use! (because it begins with Q)
R - Rolls phantom drophead - for super slow posing/cruising and lording it over commoners
S - Smart city - for parking in motorcycle spots
T - TVR Cerb - because I want a TVR Cerb
U - Ultima - fills the U niche and happens to be an awesome car
V - VW classic camper - for taking surfing
W - Westfield - so my friends can race me in my caterham
X - XTREME DEATH-RACE CAR 3000
Y - Yamaha R1 - it's like a car but they only have 2 wheels apparently
Z - Zebra - the predecessor of modern cars, like a horse but angrier and stripy

And I'm done....

Edit - FFS, completely missed this bit - "The cars have to be current, i.e. in production now. " .....most of them are current (ish) frown

I'll take your word on the Xiali! Wasn't the Edsel a model by Ford?
