Hi folks. Has anyone had the pleasure of changing the Air/Fuel ratio sensor on their 2003 Impreza WRX?

The engine management light has lit, and has been confirmed by the AA and a local garage that this is the problem.

My issue is that when calling Subaru they will not tell me the part number (company policy) but offered the price for the part at £274.08 ex VAT.

Others have offered the part for around the £320 mark, and £400 fitted.

Therefore my question is can you get these parts for a cheaper price (ie afermarket Bosch ones etc?)

I am willing to change it myself for a huge saving, although for less than £60 I will let a mechanic do it due to them being a pig to remove because of the heat/expansion etc. Looking forward to a comment or two about this, thanks.

A lambda sensor you mean right?

Not sure which Lambda you need, but they do the impreza ones here for £63. I bought one from there for my MR2 turbo and it works fine.

If its a 1999 or older, its says you can just use one of the universal ones at the bottom of the page too.

Isn't a lamda sensor different to what the OP is asking for? Lamdas sit in the exhaust and measure the gases there, an air/fuel ratio? (do you mean air mass meter) sits in the intake and measures how much air is going into the engine so the ecu can decide how much fuel to throw in with it for best performance...two very seperate devices...?

Thanks to the people who replied to this post. The solution to my problem was dealt with (although not actually done the job yet) by calling Subaru and a couple of other companies.

To give advice to others who may have the same problem in the future, the Engine Light came on due to the AIR/FUEL RATIO sensor located on the manifold.....COMMONLY KNOWN as a LAMBDA SENSOR by most people, although the LAMBDA sensor is the sensor AFTER the CAT, the AIR/FUEL sensor is the one located in the manifold have a look at

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php...

to get the idea.

Hope this clears things up, and also not to be confused with the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR that is located just after the air filter.

So, the details of the car are. Impreza Wagon WRX 2003, the part number in question is (Subaru No) 22641-AA042.

Now, open to the floor. Does anyone know where to purchase either an ORIGINAL or an aftermarket part that will do the job. I can get a price of approx £270 ex VAT, but it is annoying to see other models of cars with prices of around £60.....I would like some of those apples please......any ideas??

No, I dont think so. The Lambda is the sensor that measures the Air/fuel ratio, but you are right it does sit in the exhaust.

Not all cars have or need a Air mass meter, and that does not measure the air/fuel ratio, it just tells the engine how much air mass is coming through the intake. Some cars do not have these and use MAP sensors instead.

Do a little search:

This one has the same part number for £50:

Hi Rob,

I looked at your link before but was too late frown

I am going to keep looking on ebay as it looks like it may be my best bet. I also noticed you can get them in the US for about £120 so that may be another option.

Hi. Yes I continued to drive it and found no noticeable difference to performance, fuel consumption etc.... (A RAC Engineer told me this was ok but you may be worth confirming with a Mechanic you know and trust for your own peace of mind rather than listening to me!!!).

I eventually picked up the part from a place in Poland. It was a genuine part and cost me about £140. It was also easy to replace. All I had to do was remove the drivers wheel, remove the wheel lining and heat shield. It was then a case of using a 24mm (from memory) spanner to unscrew and then screw in the new one. Once but back together and engine running the fault took a few minutes to clear.

I hope this helps.

It had its MOT in July 2009 and it passed without issue. I have also done over 20k miles since then.

Are you doing the job yourself or via a garage?

Double check you secured the harness correctly where it runs up the inner wing to the connector, I changed this on my 01' Impreza WRX when I had it and a year later the clip worked loose as I was lapping the Nurburgring.

It left the car immobile as it shares the same fuse as the ECU (unbeknown to me) and kills the engine if it shorts to the engine.

Lesson learnt for me frown

Anyway, I believe after market ones cause all sorts of problems and only the genuine Subaru one is any good. I got mine second hand for £85 from a breakers.

That is good advice on the wiring and after market parts Bugeyeandy. I too was told by the guys at Prosport in Stockport that the after market ones can cause all kinds of issues.
