Just been having a discussion on another forum where I mentioned that my dads RS arrived at the dealership today. I also mentioned his insurance quote too because I thought it was nice and low which is surprising because I think of the Focus RS as the modern day equivalent to the Escort Cosworth which had some fairly ludacris quotes back in its day (from what i've been told).

I think the Focus RS is to Ford now, what the Escort Cosworth was to Ford back when it was new. Others seem to disagree. They say it isn't as special and it never will be.

I can see where they're coming from because the Focus is a brand new car and the Escort is an iconic classic, but I think the Mk2 RS will be the same 10-15 years down the line.

What do you think?

I agree. It's moving the game on, attracting positive reviews from almost all quarters, and delivers performance straight out of the showroom that rivals many lower end supercars. It will also be an icon, given time.

Very like the Cosworth, then.

And the insurance quotes on the Cosworth were driven by risk of theft more than risk of crashing. Which, with much better anti-theft security on new cars, is why the premium just doens't need to be so stupidly unaffordable.

I think Ludacris is a "music" artist.

It's absolutely ludicrous. Really. wink

Where the Focus beats the competition hands down and features new tech for little money the Escort Cossie was the opposite being too expensive (28k) and slightly behind the competition-especially 94-96!

So really they are quite different.

The FRS is a great car, but it doesn't have the magic the Escort Cosworth did.

It really looked like nothing else when it was launched in 92, and still looks epic today. Ian Callum designed it, don't ya know.

They are a bit difficult to compare..

The Escort Cosworth (which is really a short wheelbase Sierra, not an Escort) was built first and foremost to satisfy homologation regs to qualify for Grp A rally status. The fact that they weren't bad road cars is a bit secondary but it did help them sell the required numbers.

The Focus was built purely to satisfy car enthusiasts and hopefully put a few pennies in Fords bank account.

I'm not disaggreeing, but in what way? The fact that they were both available in imperial blue is the only thing I can think of.

The mk1 was less powerful and slower wasn't it? Also the mk1s styling was quite subtle and the Escort wasn't.

I don't think the two can be compared either.

There will never be another Ford that can be likened to the Escort and/or Sierra Cosworth.
Those days are long gone and the new cars, as brilliant as they are, are just too "normal".

They are just a fast, sporty Focus. The Escort was different. It felt (and still does feel) special and like it would spit you out and chew you up.

The Focus doesn't. It just feels like an easy to drive on the limit, fast, modern car.
As good as it is it's still a bit disappointing.

I don't get the big deal about Escort Cosworths, not my cup of tea anyway and not very pretty either.

There are few Focus RSs stolen and/or crashed so far, simply because there are so few around. It might be that when the Sierra Cosworth first came out, it too had lowish premiums. Maybe if they become a target, and get ditched and hedged a lot, the premiums will go up.

Blue one was parked up and got hit by a truck.

Every car is subject to crashes and theft.

They're more likely to get your keys out of the house than use a coathanger and screwdriver to drive the car away though.
