Right chaps, im driving from Wigan to Newquay this Saturday.

What time do you recomend leaving in order to miss the majority of traffic, there are 9 of us in 3 cars and the others think around 5am.

any suggestions or any tips of where to stop off ?

thanks

That is probably about a 5-6 hour drive, so you're going to hit traffic at some point i'd bet. Just make sure you take a few stops to rest and keep alert. As it's mostly motorway until you get to Devon/Cornwall, there will be an abundance of service stations to choose from - all equally crap and expensive.

set off at about 9 at night. miss all the traffic and have an enjoyable hoon down free from scamera vans at the side of the road and tractors and more tourists in campers.

You should be fine setting off at that time.

I recently did Leeds to Devon and it was 5 hours pretty much, with 2 longish stops for the dog, and the baby.

Will you be going down the M1? My road network geography is cr@p!

The longest roadworks in the history of roadworks are currently in place somewhere near the middle ish.

Good luck.....it no bother if the traffic is with you, that rarely happens though, for me anyway!

I'm probably the only person on here who finds the M5 probably one of the best motorways in the country.

Lovely scenery (On some parts) and yet to get majorly held up on there.

Setting off at 5am from Wigan probably a good bet. Just be make sure you are on the M5 and past Birmingham by 7.30am (You should be). Watch around Bristol way though as you may get held up there if you hit it at the wrong time. Might be an idea stopping at the services just past Worcester till rush hour has died at Bristol.

Leave about midnight, great drive through the night, be there for first light.

Gains you an extra day really.

I seem to remeber if you leave during the day then it goes motorway, motorway, motorway, traffic jam traffic jam traffic jam.

I did Newquay to Manchester in 5 hours 15 mins with a stop for lunch and getting stuck in traffic in Birmingham. My mate who lives down in Truro has done it in 4 hours 30 without stopping so that gives you a rough idea.

Avoid Birmingham at peak times and it should be fine.

I work all over the UK and leave at some silly times (2am, 3am etc), you would not believe how BUSY some motorways are at the time!! I would seriously consider leaving around 8pm.

Im not really up for going at midnight i dont think as we would be arriving at 5am, and what is there to do anywhere at 5am?

I did the whole A38/M5/M4/M25 route starting from Plymouth at 9 am on Saturday. A38/M5 and M4 ok at those times. The M25 was cued anticlockwise from the M1 to the M3, deadlocked, clockwise direction (for me) was fine (this is around 12-1pm. And the A303 was at a standstill, so I can only assume that the traffic heading towards Cornwall was backed up from the M1 all the way there.

Park car near beach. Play football / cricket on beach for an hour, get breakfast in a cafe. set tent up if your camping down there.

Go to pub when they open at 10am.

It gains you an extra day.

Or you could leave at 5am, hit traffic, get held up in roadworks, get stressed and annoyed, get to Newquay at 3pm.

First day is wasted.

And with the ashes starting at 11 that is also a great idea.

yes Yep midnight or just after would be my call too. You'll end up around Exter services ish just as they are kicking up the breakfast service. Then ahead of the rush, remember there is still a long way to go from Exeter.

Last time we went to Cornwall (on the Lizard) we set off from Derbyshire about the same time you have planned ie 5ish. We were Strensham for brekkie, Exeter lunch, and eventually got to our destination (Kuggar) for a late(ish) tea-time after a total grueller.

The time before we'd taken our type 2 campervan on the set off at midnight plan and had an extra day sunning ourselves in the Newquay campsite. Why we didn't repeat that I still don't understand.

I can see the point of leaving at night, quiet roads, general hoonage etc, but your fked by the time you get there = first day ruined! I'd rather leave at 5 ish, get stuck in the odd traffic jam, there for dinner time and at least you've had some sort of sleep!
