Tonight I took a large knive and got rid of all the ice in my freezer so i could fit food in again.

As I removed the ice there was a weird hissing sound that eventually stopped but sounded like built up pressure releasing.

Now it smells particularly strange.

Is this a bad thing? Should I be worried.

I'm no sure who to call at this hour of the night so I thought I would ask you guys.

Have you cut into the insulation? I'm wondering if the weird hissing sound was the refrigerant escaping.. I seem to remember being told not to use a carving knife to prize the ice off a fridge due to the possibility of damaging it..

Sounds bad, probly smells it too. Not really a good idea to use sharp objects to hack away as you've prob pierced a hole. Best get that sellotape out to mend it.

You cant mend it. Its pierced the coolant pipes and allowed the refrigerant to escape.
ventilate the house as well as the fridge and dont use it! Unplug it.

Yep, I was joking. It's more than likely knack'd and helped the greenhouse effect no end.

Only in a poisonous/toxic sort of way.. Best open a few windows and buy a new one. On the positive side, you may not have too much trouble disposing of it as there won't be any CFCs in it to worry about..

I did exactly this years ago - it can be fixed fairly cheaply by getting a bloke in to seal the puncture (looks a bit like grey sealing wax) and re-pressurising.

Lets get this straight... I didn't defrost it! my girlfriend said "hmmm, we need more space in the freezer" I said "OK". Big knive in hand I hacked the ice out and unfortunately made a hole or two...

Its now unplugged and all my windows are open.

My god im useless!

Not too sure how they're made. If the freezer compartment bit is in a vacuum then you're probably ok, prob just a re-seal like Simpo says, if you've pierced the tubes then you're in for a new fridge I would reckon. As for the knife, try blunting it first.

Good luck.

Its the freezer compartment bit and I seem to have piereced the plastic area that carrys round the coolant.

New fridge on Monday... I need a beer.

Cheers guys!

Note to self - Leave sharp objects alone on Saturday night.

Maybe get a frost-free one!
NB To get rid of your old freezer do what my accountant did. He left in on the verge outside his house for a week or two hoping someone would nick it. They didn't. So then he put a sign on it saying 'Fridge for sale £50'. It promptly disappeared

Oh, THIS sounds familiar. When my ex and I set up house together, we had two sets of everything. So we decided which to keep and which to get rid of. We kept 'my' fridge freezer. Then she did the pointy-knife-in-the-ice trick and shagged it. So I (not 'her', or even 'we') had to buy a new one...
