One of my numpty collegues has filled his mk4 golf with petrol by accident. The tank was near empty before so any diesel is very dilute now. The last time I tried to syphon a modern car I found it impossible due to the anti syphon, I'm assuming that the Mk4 Golf has this feature to.

Does anyone know how to get the petrol out easily or is it a call the AA out job?

Cheers

Has he driven it or started the engine?

if he has he may be in for a rather large repair bill

It's not been started I believe he's been pushed away from the pumps.

good you may just have to drain the tank then.

Im not sure how though I would do as you said and call the AA.

Lift rear seat base.
Undo 3 screws for black circle cap
disconnect feul pump pipes.
disconect multi plug
see which way the arrow on teh pump points towards the engine.
put a long flexible hose onto that outlet
direct hose into a container
put a 12v feed and earth to the 2 large terminals on the pump. (check which if unsure)
pump out diesel.
Refit all above
fill with petrol and injector cleaner. change fuel filter
drive carefully
refill with petrol
drive carefully

carry on as normal

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately he's a muppet and actually drove the car off the forecourt because other people were waiting, why he didn't ask for help with pushing the car I have no idea.

I think he's learnt his lesson as he was still at the petrol station when I left at 5, apparently the RAC were enroute. It is a company car though so he won't have to foot the bill himself for repairs but I doubt they will be pleased as it's a car that they actually own rather than lease.

Won't the company's insurance cover it?

got a company car, think the excess is £250, cost of the AA man is £300 or so...

pretty sure that i I done that, would get to pay the excess at least

m8 has a petrol car and a diesel flat top truck, he filled it up on an almost empty tank with petrol and just about got it home when it conked out and died, being a big old engine, it might have saved him and is being sorted over the weekend smile

Oucch, thats not gonna be cheap.

When I worked for toyota we had ppl doing that in RAV4's and Landcruisers alot.

If they drove it far enough, they wrecked the injectors. On a LC thats about £380 plus vat per injector and there are 6 of them. Then there is injector pipes, new fuel lines (petrol wrecks the rubber in the seals) and labour, hmmm, £4500 ish

it should be fine , drain the tank change the filters and fill it back up with derv .

ETA its the common rails that dont like fuel because of the tolerences at which everything runs , the diesel is used to lube the pump and petrol strips all that away causing the damage , the gold mk4 has a cement mixer engine so should be fine .

Just drain, refill, change fuel filter, and run.

If its fked, its fked and won't work.

If it isn't fked (which is more likely), it'll work.

I see no point in spending money to repair faults that may not exist.

I tend to agree with the later comments. it will probably be fine. refill and change filter and away you go.

legend. i had a moment and put petrol in my diesel. and you were right this works a treat and saves £130+ in expense getting sum1 else to come fix it. bargain. Disclaimer it worked for me but thats not to say it will work for every1 so try at your own risk.

I forgot all about this topic but I'll give it a bit of an update seeing as it's been bumped.

It took two hours for the rac to get out and pick him up. Having a full tank of petrol it required towing to a garage as the fuel was too large an amount to be pumped out at the side of the road. On the way back there the tow bar came dislodged and as the engine wasn't running the breaks didn't work properly resulting in the bar going through the rad.

The rac were quite apologetic and provided a courtesy car and undertook all of the repairs including sorting the fuel issue out, the car has done a.fair few miles since this and is running fine as far as I'm aware.
