Speaking about the “domination of the car over the pedestrian”, the future King said: “We must surely be able to organise ourselves... in ways in which we are not dependent on it to such a great extent for our daily needs."

He's been misquoted there, he actually said we need to reduce our usage of cars and walk or use a public peasant wagon for short or unimportant journeys.

Not that I will but that's because my car isn't affecting the climate.

He has had the Aston since he was 21 - so thats nearly 40 odd years, I bet he drives less than 5000 miles a year, personally.

And he was suggesting that people shouldn't use cars when their is an alternative. Perhaps he was aiming that at Gordon - who takes the ministerial jag from Downing Street all the way to the Houses of Parliament.....

As part of cutting his carbon footprint, the prince has converted the 38-year-old classic car - a 21st birthday present from the Queen - to run on 100 per cent bioethanol fuel distilled from surplus British wine.

Aides said this was partly due to the pattern of Royal trips set by the Foreign Office. He has now doubled the target to a 25 per cent fall in emissions by 2018.

Converting the Aston Martin played a small but symbolic role. The Prince's chief aide Sir Michael Peat said: 'Charles only travelled two or three hundred miles a year in the Aston but he wanted it to be environmentally friendly. It just happened that our bioethanol supplier makes the fuel from surplus English wine.'

The car - which is kept at Highgrove and clocks up just 300 miles a year - averages ten miles a gallon, the equivalent of 4.5 bottles of wine for every mile.

At £1.10 a litre, the bioethanol is only slightly cheaper than conventional petrol, but is estimated to produce 85 per cent less carbon dioxide.

The grapes used for Charles's fuel have already been fermented into wine on an English vineyard near Swindon, Wiltshire.

Its owners bottle all they can, but cannot produce more than their EU quota. Rather than destroy the excess, the vineyard now sells it to the Gloucestershire biofuels supplier Green Fuels, where it is distilled.

Thought he could have converted it to run on Gin since there must be a surplus at Buck House now Princess Margaret and the Queen Mum are no longer with us.

Thanks for the clarification, perhaps a step in the right direction, however it still costs more energy to manufacture than using 100 octane from the pump....

But at least he's trying. Surely a better role model to run a vintage Aston as green as he can than some pompous hypocrite who buys a prius and then lectures everyone about how green they're being.

Given the actual context of his remarks, the extremely low annual mileage of his Aston and the fact it runs on old wine its hardly that hypocritical.

Also the tossbag comment is a bit sad given the amount of work he does for charities and the princes trust etc...there are far worse people to get upset over.

He is the only one of the royals I actually quite like and think has sensible views on most things.
