Unique Ferrari P4/5 Racer On The Cards

Rebodied Pininfarina Enzo could be heading for the Nurburgring 24 hours

Nice, but why is it outside a Mitsubishi showroom?

Ferrari fans, regular PHers and, well, anyone who tends to dribble at the sight of heart-breakingly exotic metal may well remember James Glickenhaus's unique Ferrari P4/5.

The one-off Pininfarina-bodied stunner was originally a star of the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California and now Glickenhaus is planning a successor - and this time it would be a pukka racing version.

The P4/5 Competizione would be an entirely new car rather than a conversion of the Pebble Beach car, and would be entered in a major 24-hour race next year, most likely the Nurburgring 24 hour event on May 13-16.

We'll take two, please...
We'll take two, please...
Glickenhaus says that "there are a LOT of stars that would have to align for this to happen, but it's not impossible".

At the moment the car is little more than a dream and a couple of Photoshop images, but more detailed information on the P4/5 Competizione's specifications should appear over the next few weeks, so watch this space.

If the car goes ahead, it will revive memories of the car's spiritual ancestors of the late 1960s, particularly the gorgeous 1966 330 P3 and the 1967 P4 sports cars.

Even if the race version doesn't happen, we're eternally grateful to Mr Glickenhaus for reminding us about his wonderful creation, and for providing us with the perfect opportunity for a quick ogle-fest of the original car (below).

What class would that run in? I was under the impression that the 'ring 24hours was for production cars?

Looking at them now, it seems the P4/5 provided a lot of inspiration for the new 458, especially in the lights, grille treatment at the front... nice job Pininfarina.

I see that now too.

The rear wheel arch lines are very similar to the 458.

Love it! biggrin

I thought it was great when it first appeared, but think it looks a little dated now.

THAT is what the enzo successor should have looked like. Actually its what the Enzo should have looked like.

(Note to self. Read the whole article before commenting.)

I hope Ferrari take some styling cues from it as it is much lovelier than anything Marinello is churning out at the moment.

Not "production cars" per se, but the organisers are pretty restrictive. They allow older DTM cars. I can't think of a car that's not at least a silhouette of a production car. I'd be very surprised if this were allowed.
Also, that race has a pretty high crash rate. I'ts not really the sort of thing for multi-million £ one-offs.

I presume thats partly what Glickenhaus means when he sys that "a LOT of stars have to align for this to happen" ie they would need to change or bend the VLN rules

Just me that thinks it looks awful then, especially with those cartoonishly oversized and far too busy wheels?

I didn't like the 458 either, maybe there's just something about this design that grates with me.

As with most cars though, I think it requires being seen (and heard) in the flesh to make a final decision.

Too much money in too few hands, that's this world's problem..
