first one, the curse of autos!
I've been driving autos for some time and have once mistaken where my foot is! The harder I braked the faster the car went! Good thing I leave plenty of space infront of me in traffic! It only happens in traffic where you are creeping and move your foot over the accelerator but don't actually push it down, if there is a long enough pause you'll forget ytou've moved your foot and think you're over the brake!

It's amazing to see the number of drivers here who have never made a mistake at all!!
I was brave enough to admit that it is possible to become slightly confused. I never hit anything nor did my passengers notice I just scared myself by gently pressing the accelerator instead of the brake.

I think in all seriousness that this place is a minefield for the 'honest' poster and any comments receiving banter are expected.
However, those dishing it out aren't totally innocent. Are you all? Bet you've done something daft that we can all laugh at but don't have the guts to mention in public?
I credit Freecar for his honesty. I have even done something similar myself when swapping from car to car and then into an auto. Its so easy and when you expect to brake for a junction, albeit at a really slow speed, then end up gently accelerating and almost jumping on the brake it can take you by surprise especially if the pedal are badly positioned. As was the case in my wife's ex Laguna. The accelerator was set slightly higher than the brake so catching it with the side of my foot was all too easy...

Well, I've had some pretty serious accidents - including this one time where I fell asleep whilst pulling off the M25, woke up in the hard shoulder with a jump, spun the car and ploughed backwards into a lampost at about 50. My girlfriend was in the car, and if we'd connected with the lampost at any other angle one or both of use would have been minced.
But I still maintain, that stepping on the accelerator when you're trying to brake is retarded and you shouldn't be driving if that is a problem for you. Because it *is* retarded, regardless of anyone elses driving ability.
