Shelby GT500 To Ride Again

American racer grants 'continuation' license for classic Mustang

A rendering of the new Shelby GT500...
The Shelby 'continuation car' saga continues apace, with the news that Classic Recreations have been granted a license by the great man to reproduce the iconic Shelby GT500CR from the late 1960s.

New 'continuation' versions of the Cobra have been licensed by Shelby since the 1980s, assembled originally from new old stock and more latterly from newly manufactured components, but this is the first time a Mustang based Shelby has been officially authorised.

"I am humbled and honoured by the opportunity to work with a legend like Carroll Shelby," says Classic Recreations owner Jason Engel. "We are still working out a few details, but I know Shelby fans will love the new car.

...and the real thing from 1967
...and the real thing from 1967
"It retains the most iconic Shelby elements everyone loves with modern performance and supercar level horsepower. Then add the panache of having a real Shelby GT500CR complete with a serial number and the man's name right on the rocker panel. For Mustang fans, you absolutely can't beat that."

Every Shelby GT500CR will be built with authentic Shelby Performance parts and with input and oversight from Carroll Shelby Licensing and Shelby Automobiles technical staff. Each car will leave the workshop with an official Shelby serial number, badges and will be included in the official Shelby Worldwide Registry.

More details on the new model will be released shortly, they say.

The original fastback is a classic svelte beauty. This looks to be a stunner smile

By comparison the modern mustangs, like that blue abomination above, are shockingly hideous lumps!

This is what sets it apart.

I still prefer the british interpretation frown

But I will agree it is a nice looking car. To my eye though there's nought wrong with the new ones either!

Well first off all I don't want to know how you know that

Secondly, 15K won't get me one, if I sold mine and MrsFlaky's then maybe in with a chance!

Coolest American car ever.

I'd want the green one in Bullet though, it had such simple lines yet still looked like an animal.

+ 1 on the Bullet Mustang, one of those(replica) sold recently on here for 10k, needed a bit of work, but looked amazing.

Imagine you are in the market for a new kidney, do you go for the PHers kidney for £15K, more likely than not on it's last legs due to regular alcohol abuse, or do you go shopping in a third world country, like say Iraq, where you can get one from a young muslim for less than £5K and all done as part of a package tour in Turkey?

Anyway surely the best way to acquire a Shelby GT500 is to steal one and go on an epic car chase wink

Slightly off topic but found this online, interesting ....( The sounds emitted by the Mustang suggest a lot of double-clutching -- something that would not have been needed with a '68 Ford transmission. McQueen confirmed that the sweet racket of the car's engine and transmission were overdubbed recordings of a Ford GT40 driven at full tilt.)

[pendant]

That car was built by West Coast Customs not Shelby.

Yep, and the Charger was much faster than the GT390 they used as well
