My BMW Z4 has a perfectly good means of managing driver incompetence. It's called DSC and is available across the BMW range. It limits driver input on wet roundbouts and ensures I don't suffer "girl driver MGB TF syndrome" ie looking where you've just come from.

Excellent as the BMW system is, I can't help wondering if a little PH intervention is in order. A "bit of oppo" as it were.

Previous cars were a tail happy (but fwd) Ford Puma and and a tweaked Skoda vRS (with 170 bhp). Current commute is 700C x28 (bicycle tyre) and I am well aware of how torque (mine) can ruin grip with inappropriate gearing.

I came off the bike on a wet RAB yesterday. No issues other than a sore arse. Howewver I was planning to turn the T/C off this weekend and have a bit of tail out stuff on Cheshires back roads.

In light of my sore arse this seems selfish, and a little stupid.

Switching that DSC button off completely on the road seems more elusive.

Anyone agree?

If I have to drive my GF's 500 all the ASR stuff gets turned off.
Totally pointless in a car with so little power and i can feel it intruding all the time.

It must have been carnage on the road before DSC and all the other acronyms. How did we all get anywhere...? Soon they'll just replace the steering wheel and pedals with a Playstation controller and be done with it.

Go for it, nothing wrong with turning off DSC if you're used to oversteer.

A powerful RWD is a joy to drive, something I haven't experienced since my E36, and that was a bit tailhappy when provoked.

I now settle for 4WD and leave the DSC on, but that's age for you.

Thanks for your opinion. Most people on here know about the Griff and its "man-liness".

This thread was aimed at the "other" people who don't have oil under their fingernails and can drive from Manchester to Blackpool without incident.

I was always wary of turning it off in both my 330's for some reason.

It was always off in the M5 though! Sport mode was always on too (when warm). It just felt so much more driver focused with that combination selected. I suppose the chassis inspired more confidence than the 3er's.

Fair point juan. My other car is a non PAS Skoda and my wife won't even drive it.
Somebody on another thread said driving a high powered diesel was like being on a Playstation.

So much torque ((must have been a 335d) that gear changes are inconsequential). Just push that paddle!

No DSC on my E30 or either of my previous E36s.

How sensible do you rate yourself?

How much hp on the Z4?

If you need to ask that means two things in my mind 1) you don't have enough faith in your own ability to control your right foot. 2) You're probably right not to have enough faith.

Must admit to not having turned off the DSC on my 130i yet. Only had it a few weeks and its barely stopped raining so quite slippery. Very tempted to have a play but haven't had the opportunity yet.

My only concern when turning it off is that the blackbox on the car might give away the fact to my insurers in the event that I run out of talent.

Surely unless it states 'DSC must remain operational at all times' on the policy T&C's, then it's not an issue. Bit paranoid me thinks..
