just put a call into BMW UK - thanks to the power of search. I wonder whether this is another duplicate key crime... promised call back in 2hrs.

mystery 3rd key was cut 3 days before pickup of car. Atleast it confirms suspicions about it being stolen with a valid key.

Car has been written off by the insurance company already.

eek Is this really the 3rd instance in as many weeks of BMW supplying keys which are then used to steal cars?!

must be.

To the OP, when you say the third was cut before pickup, have you only just got it?

mother bought it around April. It was cut by the supplying dealer (not the original dealer mind), theyre not sure why it was cut (yet) or the whereabouts of the other key. It was suggested that 6mths was a good "cooling off period" where if it was stolen around that time afterwards that less questions could be asked.

Sounds real dodgy. Where are the police with things so far then?

More interested in speeding motorists(!) Honestly though they are quite clearly not very interested. Regardless the 'investigating officer' was to call my parents this evening. Whether they did or not i've not been updated yet - frankly we expect little of them.

Why have the insurance co written it off already out of interest?

So key was cut 3 days before your mother bought it from dealer
Youve got to give it to them, very cunning
How many other BMWs are running around with a mystery 3rd key somewhere

I assume they believe it was stolen to order, no tracker means no likelihood of successful recovery (my own thoughts). I was quite suprised though.. anyway, Keys, V5, driving licence, and a load of other bits were sent Special Delivery already.

If the car was supplied to them with only one key, they may have cut a second for handover. Or if they have lost a key. Can you or your folks remember, were there two keys when you test drove the car?

nope, couldnt remember. However the policeman is checking all avenues now - seems quite interested in the case apparently.

BTW, this was recovered a month ago, along with another Mini, seemingly not touched once stored (wherever that was, in London).
