Well just got back from an afternoon in Manchester city centre. During our drive home, my best friends wife gave me a stern lecture on driving technique. Apparently she's clocked up nine points and attended a speed awareness course which obviously means she's well informed wink

It did transpire that I leave braking far too late. I normally wait till I see the reduce speed signs and then brake at around 30~40% effort to attain the correct entry/exit speed. Her advice was that should be braking extremely gently and much earlier say around 1000-2000 yards earlier.

So my question to you fellow ph members is

a. When did you last suffer total unforseen brake failure

b. Do you start braking for a junction from about half a mile away if you are exiting a motorway?

Sorry for the lack of structure to this post, I blame it on iPhone....

Try advanced driving forum if you want a proper answer, or GG if you want rantings. HTH.

if you go slow enough you don't have to brake much.

The last person that chopsed about how I ought to be driving experienced a full bore stop (which isn't actually that dramatic in an LDV) on the hard shoulder of the M50 and invitation to drive the fking van themselves if they'd like.

Not that I can't take a bit of constructive criticism, it's just the ones that feel inclined to dish it out liberally are the last ones you want to listen to, as is so often the case in life.

d) tell her you can't hear what she said and when she leans forward to repeat it swerve to avoid a "cat" so she clonks hers head on the window.

The worst kind of driver? A misinformed knowitall idiot who's points show how st they really are! Out of interest, what did she get the points for? I'm guessing speed cameras - ie, a driver who doesn't pay attention.

I'm not sure what kind of aerodynamical, 200psi tyred marvel she drives, but if i took my foot off the accellerator 2000yards prior to a junction, i'm fairly sure i'd have to be doing circa 130mph in order to gently brake to the correct speed.

she sounds like the sort of woman that watches one property show
then declares herself an expert.

That.

And perhaps ask her who out of the two of you is sitting on nine points and is perhaps not the best person to be doling out motoring advice?

Almost entirely innapropriate, but this tattoo was shown to me the otherday, and i think maybe its one the OP should get on the back of his neck as a warning...

- you'll have to use your imagination because the forums spellchecker wont allow me to post the image...

I know exactly what you mean - I can't be arsed fannying around with the diddy screen so end up posting stuff that is a bit half-arsed or "not very well put".

As to your back seat driver: tell her to ps off!

Had this from the mother the other day - why am I going fast (ie over 60 on a dual carriageway A road).

I had sped up from 50 to 70 ish following moving from a busy, rain swept stretch to an empty, dry stretch...
