Im looking at getting a VW Corrado, budget of £3000 but im not sure which is better overall, the 1.8 supercharged G60 or the 2.8l (or 2.9l) vr6, does anyone know the 0-60 times etc for them and whats the real world mpg like? I know its roccomended to have the g60 supercharger rebuilt every 60k, is that the only major think that needs doing?

cheers

They'll all be old now, so I guess condition is more important that spec? The VR6 will presumably be less stressed, and less to go wrong?

(I'm biased, as I loved my VR6)

VR6 is much quicker the G60 isn't that fast by modern standards think the 0-60 quoted is 8secs

VR6 reliability. G60 Exclusivity. Hmmmmm why not have both? Supercharge the VR6 with bits of a Chryler Neon engined BmzW Mini and some duct tape.

Well, I could write a lot, but you're best best is to go to www.corrado-forum.net and use the search to look for this very question... If you sign up you an browse the 'For Sale' section too

In summary though:

On paper the VR6 is quicker as it can hit 60mph in second which the G60 can't with a standard gearbox). It's a more relaxed car to drive, and makes a good 'mini-GT' but the handling is not as sharp due to the extra weight up front.

The G60 is a sharper and more raw experience, and if tuned can match the VR6's output relatively easily (at the expense of charger longevity). The charger can need re-building every so often depending on the state of tune.

£3,000 will net you a very good G60 or a pretty good VR6 (IMO). Having said that, I sold my last VR for about £1800 so there are bargains out there. I'd budget £500 for repairs post buying though smile

Cheers,
Tom

P.S. If I were to buy another, I'd go for the G60.

I remember someone saying that the superchargers regularly need a rebuild and are expensive? I would go for the VR6 purely for the sound! and they're faster smile . I wouldn't bother going for the storm has a pointless premium imho.

A friend of mine had a nicely modded G60 and I really like it.

The charger did need a rebuild every 20K or so at the state of tune he had it at (just over 200bhp but loads of torque and a great throttle response).

But the noise it made was great, and the charger let out little squeeks and whistles etc which always made me smile.

I would have a G60 just because!

Have a try in one of each and see what you think.

Must have been a bad one as I had my VR for 5 years and aside from a couple of front suspension bushes and a two new foglights it was only routine servicing needed. Look for a well. Serviced VR that isn't approaching 175k or if it has look for a head refresh. Happy hunting

Only ever drove one VR6 - I thought it's engine was creamy smooth - loved it :-)

These things must be almost collectors items by now?

The G60 was 160Bhp with an 8.3 0-60. I had one, and it was a fantastic car. I have a scanned brochure if you want a copy, pm my your address and I will burn it to disk.

Wish I'd never sold it but limited garage space meant it had to go!! I used to get between 20-30 depending on my driving style (usually nearer 20!)but less judicious use of the throttle should see 32mpg on a longer run. I cant think that you shouldnt put 3 bags of sand down on something like this...

The only problem I had was the headlights. The power went all through the switch gear before finally getting to the headlights. I put higher power bulbs in to start with but then put in a relay. Much better!

Agreed as standard they were nothing short of appauling!! A set of Philips extreme 100% should sort that out though.

I bought a VR6 in the summer and, apart from a service and replacing a coolant pipe, I've not spent a bean.

I use it every day and get an average MPG of 34-35.
