Just been called by "Accident Management Group"...
Discussion
A guy has just called me claiming to be from "Accident Management Group" (aka Ambulance Chasers....), telling me they know I've had an accident on XX date (correct date), and that my insurer passed me their details as they want to make sure I've gotten the full value of my claim before they "close their file" (despite my insurer writing to me to state that the claim was finalised and all costs recovered from the other party over 6 months ago). Anyway I asked him who my insurer was and he said "Insurance Underwriters Ltd" (or similar) and that they were the people who underwrite my company, which is why the name was different, and other such b
ks. Anyway I told him that he was infact an ambulance chaser, and to tell me where he actually got my details from... at which point he hung up.
My main concern is where this company got my details from (including the date of my non fault claim)? Anyone experienced similar?

Have you signed up for any "insurance comparison" sites? I had a call shortly after doing this, when looking for a better quote come renewal.
I just had this. Renewed my car insurance through "im in, shouldnt you be?", then got a text message saying that this company could save me money. Well in that case, why didnt you ring me before i took out the poilcy you daft f
kersSounds dodgy to me; like someone has sold/managed to get hold of an old list of cases/claims and they are chancing it by spam telephoning to see if there might be a claim to make. Then sell on to a law firm somewhere.
Total guesswork, but I wouldn't be surprised. And it's totally illegal.

Had a call from "Accident investigation bureau" asking us about an accident that we have been reported to have had last year. Apparently the UK government gave them our tel. number. Hmmmmm. He didn't say where the accident happened.
Sounds like they are just scammers hoping to catch people who have had accidents and assume it relates to that.Doobs said:

Not quite, because he knew I had a non fault claim, and the exact date. Thanks everyone - I have hit 2/3 price comparison sites in the last month or so. Despite ticking all the correct DPA boxes it looks like the shysters have still sold my details on.
I received a call from these idiots last month...
They had all the details of a non-fault claim from November 2006. According to them, the other side still have £1,600 for compo in an account, even though this has long been settled, and this amount is still available to be claimed. The tossbag told be something along the lines of ”You don’t need to have a doctor’s note... all you need to do is now tell me that you experienced some mild discomfort afterwards, or maybe had a headache”. Needless to say, I told them to bugger off.
The bloke claimed they’d got the details from Norwich Union, who were the other side’s insurers – Norwich Union my arse. I reckon it was either the car hire company (Enterprise, as already mentioned by someone else) or the insurance repair place (a garage in Sidcup).
The tragic thing is, I bet there are plenty of greedy pillocks out there who are keen to take up this offer.

For all these sorts of sites I usually enter the tel number of a Chinese takeaway on the other side of town that I never use, so never had a problem
They rang me a few months ago, several months after a non-fault accident which had been fully resolved. I told them where to go and hung up, at which point they rang straight back and started having a go at me
My hire car was supplied through Enterprise as well, sounds like they are the common factor.

Unfortunately the sheer number of entities involved in any claim, combined with the generous commissions that the ambulance chasers will pay to get a lead, means that there is no easy way of telling who gave them your name, unless they tell you themselves (which they are legally obliged to do IIANM).
In a relatively 'simple' claim where you have been hit by a third party, you are likely to have any of the following involved, all of whom will have your details:
The good news is that claims management companies are now being more actively regulated by the government, who are making life more difficult for the cowboy operations. You can check the status of any given company at https://www.claimsregulation.gov.uk - this is also the place to report any sharp practice using the form at https://www.claimsregulation.gov.uk/contact.aspx.

- your broker
- your insurance company
- your legal expenses insurance company
- recovery company
- claims management company (some insurers sub-contract this whole area)
- loss adjusters & assessors (ditto)
- garage
- hire car provider
- Much of the above possibly duplicated for the third party.
- Then when you declare the claim while shopping round, the insurers, brokers and aggregators you have used.

Your Insurance company/broker, reantacar company, garage are all paid a decent commission for forwarding names to Accident Management Companies that lead to a successful result.
If you do have a genuine claim for whiplash etc, I suggest you appoint your own, local solicitor rather than one of these ambulance chasers who use most of their fee to pay off referrers.
