I may be old before my time, but I fancy a VW Phaeton in November when I become 21. Unfortunately the W12 is out of the question for insurance reasons so the 3.2 petrol V6 is the model I would most likely be going for.

Yes I know this thread is very early, but I have been looking at them quite often, I think they're something of a bargain considering the kit etc. It will be a performance drop from the Megane, but I imagine far more comfortable for the likely motorway cruising I will have to do soon when I qualify.

So has anyone owned one or currently own one? Are they any good? What sort of servicing costs can I expect?

Cheers,

James

I'm 21 and have managed to get a reasonable insurance quote on my Fabia VRS. How have you already got insurance for a 225 Cup?

Nobody said it was reasonable... hehe

My initial quote was very high, thankfully I do limited milage at the moment. My renewal for this year was several hundred pounds less than the initial quote too. Both parents are also on the policy which helps. Car is parked in a behind a locked gate each night too.

Strangely, insurance for an R26 was over double that of the Cup.

These cars make me sex wee at the thought in a few years time, I doubt running costs can be very friendly though.

If you can afford it - go for it.

But if there is one thing I learned from having a big expensive car from a young age - having a big finance burden over your head isn't much fun.

If you can afford it but it won't leave you much money - don't do it. Consumables, tax and petrol (as well as insurance) will cripple you!

I've seen that one but not 100% sure it's legit, far below that of the other W12s I have seen for sale.

There is a V6 one for sale for sub £9k on PH, high milage but full service history. Something like that, perhaps with a fewer miles if at all possible.

Last weeks Autocar had a £20k - Passat or Phaeton challenge thing. Might be worth getting hold of a copy.

I'd love a fat one wink

I'd go for it.

Not in the same league but I had my first Vauxhall Omega at 18. Just over 16ft of bargetastic waftmobile compared to the little hatches the yoof of the time had to put up with.

Since then i've had a thing for big cars - maybe not overly fast, but always vast and comfortable.

See, thats what I'm after now, vast and comfy. The roads of South Shields are shockingly bad and covered with speedbumps. Unforgiving seats/chassis/tyres/baskside mean I get annoyed at times. A Phaeton would waft over and I'd be smug with my heated bottom gentley nestled on german cow.

I like the look of 7 series too, reason for the Phaeton is that to many it just looks like a Passat. Rare as hens teeth round my way, only ever seen one on the road and I initially thought it was a Passat!
