Inline Oil Filters
Discussion
I'm on my fourth rack rebuild! Speaking to the company yesterday they advised it as the Griff pump is steel running in cast iron and microscopic metallic particles at high temperature tend to damage the seals over time. I've also replaced all the hoses as a precautionary measure as these can break down and introduce foreign bodies into the system.
An oil filter is cheaper than a rack rebuild.

The filter will be in the return line so pressure isn't the issue it's flow rate. I considered a fuel filter, but as oil is more viscous I wanted something specifically designed for hydraulic systems.
Power Steering Tips Help and Advice
PROTECT THE INSTALLATION AND WARRANTY OF ALL POWER STEERING UNITS
FLUSH THE SYSTEM
Refer to owners manual or manufacturer's specifications to determine the proper fluid to be used in the power steering system and the rack and pinion unit. Use only recommended fluids.
Other steering components may retain residue from the old system and contaminate the new rack immediately, possibly voiding the warranty. If in doubt fit a inline filter to the return hose (low pressure pipe).
A leading cause of malfunctioning units is hose residue in the system. Hoses don't just "up and break". They deteriorate - they rot - they break away - they slough off bits and pieces of rubber residue, passing them into the system to plug up or gum up the valves and orifices in the Rack and Pinion unit.

How about some kind of magnet, attatched to the dipstick in the PAS reservoir?

99% sure my friend uses what you need in Auto Transmissions.
When they have inaccessible filters he adds an inline one when he fits transmission coolers.
I'll ask him tomorrow.
Thanks, I believe he will know too When they have inaccessible filters he adds an inline one when he fits transmission coolers.

I think a 1/2" Magnafine is what I want, but finding a UK stockist for a 1/2" one is proving a little tricky.Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
