I am planning the summer's mods to my MGF - one of which is a Trophy style front splitter which has holes formed into it for front fogs.

I don't really need front fogs but I suppose one day I might like to have them installed. Its a very expensive retrofit I understand.

The splitter will look daft with just two holes in it, so can I fill the spaces with non-wired in fog lights and still pass the MOT?

I have had cars pass an MOT with only one fog light working, and another that passed every year with covers on the lights. So I assume they are not part of the test. Like reversing lights.

Rear fog lights are (I assume) a different matter, post 81(?) cars need what they have working.

I took the OH's Corsa in a for an MoT a few weeks ago (06 reg if that makes any difference). Both rear fogs were full of water and subsequently don't work, it still passed the MoT but they were put on as advisorys.

Cheers for the quick response. I just assumed if something was fitted it had to work.

Fog lights are optional so they are not required to work. If only everyone's weren't wired up.

Yup, front fogs are optional and are not required to be working for an MOT.

If you have fog lights they need to work. If they dont you will get a VDRS form from the BiB and it will need to be signed by an MOT station as to their functionality.

Just like ABS, if its fitted it has to work.

What about rear numberplate lights?

If it's not there, will it fail (there is one left out of the two)?

You would have to be fussy but it could fail.

Could be wrong but I think this only applies to rear foglight/s.

Rear number plate lamps are an MOT fail. Both have to be working.

I don't recall ever having seen front fogs being checked on any MOT I have had, and I watch them all being done. The rear 'high intensity lamp' is tested and is a fail if duff.

I'm not sure the 'if it's fitted it must work' thing is correct.

Just checked the MOT testers manual and the fronts are not checked but the BIb can still issue a DVRS form to get them working again, strange I know. After reading on here I dont think I will bother with a VDRS form for this. I may run the risk of looking even more of a dick!

Does the MOT say you have to have two? One of the lights fell out (I have a replacement but the garage is 20 miles away - for various reasons and I cant get there easily) and so it only has one.

There is no bulb casing or fitting, just a hole with some wires tucked away neatly in the body, with the other side working fine?

The tester better hope VOSA don't check as he'll be in a bit of trouble if they do. Front fogs if fitted don't need to work but rears do. If you only have one rear fitted it has to be on the off side.

two of my cars that have had front fogs have both been checked, when one front fog light bulb was out it failed MOT ..

so i would say - if it is fitted, it needs to work.

That's just it, there isn't a unit there.

Just a hole.

If you look at that pic, it's the right hand numberplate light. Gone, not there. at all.

Front fogs are NOT included in a test as they come under the description of optional lighting and I'm afraid after reading this both the number plate lights have to work.

http://www.ukmot.com/1-1.asp#Text_top

I suppose it's similar to the spare wheel. Not part of the test and can be flat and bald. It's fitted, but it doesn't have to work.

I'd say that's a fail then.

Read http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_110.htm

'Fail' is defined as:

5. A rear registration plate lamp
a. not fitted

b. insecure

c. with any bulb not working

d. not illuminating the rear
registration plate

One of your lamps isn't fitted as per manufactured, so reason 5a applies, no?

You could always submit it and see how picky they are...
