I have a nice 260bhp V8 engine which I was intending to stick in my MX5.

However my 5 is currently supercharged to over 200bhp and I absolutely love it so I'm wondering if a better option might be to stick the V8 in something else.

Hence it would have to be at least a 2+2 (because otherwise I'd be in the 5)

So what decent RWD donors are there ?

944 - seems a bit pointless as the Turbo is so good
RX7 - do some FD's have rear seats ?
E30 - Bit too ordinary

I'm not wanting to take on a 70's basket case and totally rework it but am sure there must be some other options I'm overlooking.

Cheers

200sx.

See Apex performance for the "how-to".

I'd go for the RX7 option - there seems to be quite a good following for V8 ones with values to match. As a previous owner of an RX8, i'd say the rotary engine was the only thing that would put me off buying an RX7 nd a V8 one really ticks boxes.

Your decision to avoid putting it in the MX5 is probably wise - I'd imagine the V8 is somewhat heavier than the current engine so would harm the handling balance of the car.

As for other options I'm sure you'll get lots of sensible ones but you could drop it into a Beetle or original Fiat 500 - Rear engine, RWD, V8... could be a little tail happy though yikeshehe

Can you even physically get it into an mx5?

My vote goes for a Morris Minor.....

I would go for the Porsche 944. Yes, the turbo and the S2 are already very capable cars, but that big 'four is a seriously dull engine. Something with a bit more go and rather more character would be ideal. It's not an uncommon conversion either, so you'd probably find some guidance out there.

On a related note, I think a tweaked Alfa V6 in one of the early 'pod' dashboard cars would be fantastic - like a miniature Ferrari Daytona! Somebody please build one.

Possibly falling foul of the 'basket case' stipulation - a cheap Sierra?

Reliant Scimitar SE5a. There is a PH'r with a TVR spec rover V8 slotted into one.

The Scimitar would be great.

For the 944 there is a US company that sticks chevy engines in them http://www.renegadehybrids.com/

Snap! Opel Manta

An early '70s 'A' for the junior muscle car looks which would suit a V8 perfectly:

or an '80's B coupe - wide arch Group B 400 style:

Cheers guys...

I've had Mantas etc and as I want a daily driver I want something newer.

The 200SX was a good idea which has reminded me that I used to yearn for a Skyline but was put off by the possible big bills.

R32 or R33...

Off to take a look in the classifieds.

260bhp isn't much more than most of the suggested cars already have, thus you'd be aiming for a result which is about character more than outright performance. On that basis the donor car should be something fun and/or characterful.

200SX S13 would get my nod as it's cheap and has lots of parts available for track or drifting type activities.

944s and the like would perhaps be too expensive a base car though a 924 could be fun - I think that the engine bays are the same size.

Assuming that the v8 is a Ford unit I'd be temped by some classic Ford options. If a RWD Escort couldbe found for the right money that would suit a v8 to my mind. Someone has suggested a Sierra and I'd add Capri to that (if you're lucky you can spend as long on it as that guy at evo).

I also wonder if one could be shoe horned into a '70s or '80s Lotus. Perhaps an Excel...
