Every year the same thing, I check the renewal on line, renewal comes through post and is more expensive. I make the call and then get the on line quote.

Only thing is, this year the variance is £130!! Are people just accepting that the first quote through the post is acceptable?

I am sure I am not alone, insurer is based on "multiquote" and sailor type guy smile (And I am very happy with the quote)

I think there's a few reasons.

1. Apathy. Some people can't be bothered to spend hours hunting for the best price when its easier to just let their insurance auto-renew.

2. Loyalty. Gods knows why, but some people might have some brand loyalty to their insurer and this is (IMO) the most likely group of people to get shafted.

3. Some people will choose insurers based on more than price. Certain companies have a reputation for being cheap but absolutely useless when it comes to handling claims. When your premiums start to plataeu having built your NCB it might be worth spending an extra £50 per year if it means if the worst happens you are insured by a company who will actually do a half-decent job of handling your claim. This is the only good reason i can think of to not choose the cheapest quote and stay with your insurer.

Only the first one is valid in this instance as I assumed the OP was talking about an online quote with the same company then calling them up and getting the lower online quote.

They can still be loyal and have the same insurance!

My recent renewal came in from Elephant. An hour or so online found insurance £200 cheaper from Admiral. I call Elephant to see if they can beat or match. Lo and behold, Admiral are their 'sister company'. I give them my online quote number and they instantly agree to match it.

My renewal arrived on Friday. Having been subjected to the worst insurance adverts from every corner since time began, I thought I would conduct a little experiment of my own.

First I went online with the likes of go.compare, compare the codpiece, the elephant. Then I rang Aviva (ex Norwich Union) and money supermarket. I tried my high risk insurer which was great in the past (Footman James) but this vehicle is low risk and ordinary ('96 Range Rover).

Aviva claim to be offering 12 months for the price of 10..and were also implying that their premium would be better than 'online'. In my experience it was like paying for 10 months and getting 10 months but the biggest problem was what was included, or not, in the cover. The price itself is totally irrelavent if by adding so called extra's the cover becomes much higher. Quite simply no two policies were exactly the same, and it was nigh on impossible to compare like for like because they offered differing levels of cover.

Who did I go with in the end? Swift Online, which was found my Money Supermarket. It was £105 cheaper than the nearest rival, it had the best cover (recovery, green card, legal, stereo, satnav, etc) and I have been able to print my own cover docs which was quite novel. I cannot comment on how good they are in the event of a claim, but having never claimed in the last 15 years I don't see the point in spending extra expecially when the vehicle only has a value of £3k.

The playing field is quite ballanced IMO but obviously Aviva have had their nose put out of joint by the internet undercutters and they don't know how to compete with it. Shopping around is what I do every year and all this online/offline/price comparison makes no difference.. you still have to try them all frown

Yes.

People think that last year X Insurer was cheapest last year so this year it will be the same. It's also a lot easier to just let the insurance company take the money again this year rather than ring around etc... in the eyes of most people that is.......
