Anyone use Jnc 15 of the M40 ?
Discussion
I was thinking of contacting the highways agency, about the signage.
I'll tell you my thoughts, you tell me if you think I'm just being stupid (which is very very possible).
I've only used the junction twice.
Assume you are approaching from the Coventry end of the A46, and you wish to go M40 north (as I was and did).
The original A46 splits into four lanes, two for M40 south, two for M40 north, all ok so far.
If you go on the two for M40 north, you're on the new bit, you approach a traffic island, and the sign says :
To the left direction "M40 Warwick Leamington" (which is South, although this obviously isn't the conclusion they wish you to reach)
Straight over is the A46 towards Stratford
Right is some minor route I cannot remember
One my first encounter, I was in heavy traffic, I thought "**** I must have read the signs wrong, I don't want the M40 in the Warwick /Leamington direction", so took the A46 option, which would still get me to Worcester.
On my second encounter the traffic was lighter, and I had more time, so I followed the motorway sign, and sure enough you can get on the M40 north, very easily in fact.
Be honest, is it me, or are the signs missleading ?

I've rung them.
they've logged it, will pass it onto the planning team for those works (as they are still ongoing), and tell me that someone from the team will contact me.
The chap on the phone thought it is odd that they haven't put M40 north or south, but have used place names, as apparently its signage guidelines to not use place names in that context.
I'll let you know if they think its just me when they contact me.

I recall going down that way a few times, once before the works and once after and i did get the feeling there wasn't something quite right about the layout and signage.
However, save your breath calling the Highways Agency - you need the local council highway team. The roundabout is nothing to do with the HA.

Ok, I'll let you know, the HA said it was to do with them, as its a major road/motorway junction. However, save your breath calling the Highways Agency - you need the local council highway team. The roundabout is nothing to do with the HA.

A member of the planning team rang me at ten o'clock Monday morning .... less than 24 hours after I'd rung the HA.
They have noted my comments, he cannot promise anything will be changed, but was able to pull up the signage on his computer whilst he chatted to me.
He coud see the issue, and its this :
On the main A46, as was, they give you two choices, one M40 south, and two destinations, one M40 north and two destinations.
If you take the north option, you come to a traffic roundabout where to the left they give you the M40 (no north or south) and the same two destinations as they had offered you had you taken the other (southern) option on the main A46, with no mention of the northern destinations you had chosen, so he could see why I'd originally thought I'd somehow missread the previous signs and decided not to take that option, and had chosen the A46 route as a last resort.
The truth is, if you turn left at that island, you can access all destinations, as it brings you back to the original JNC 15 island.
Hats off to them, I mentioned bilkos comments to him ( I told him I'd posted on the pistonheads motoring forum regarding the query), and he asked me to post that the HA are responsible for main road motorway junctions, as it says on their website.
He thinks it should be changed (the signage), but couldn't promise me it would happen, or when it would happen.
It was ( I felt) a very good response from both the HA and the planning department for the roadworks.

Yes I thought it was confusing too. Luckily it was in the very early hours and it was deserted. I got caught in two minds which way to go. Glad the H.A are looking into it.
I must say though it looks like a weak layout for dealing with heavy traffic even if it is to get clearer signage - and let's face it, it is a very busy junction.

which is ironic really, as its all happened because of the amount of congestion there at busy times ....... and it can be a git of a busy junction.I must say though it looks like a weak layout for dealing with heavy traffic even if it is to get clearer signage - and let's face it, it is a very busy junction.
