HT leads- make your own?

Umm no, I mean you can buy HT cable and plug caps, but i can't find any information or instructions on what to do with them. I've heard about people making their own HT leads before and with Honda quoting me £120 for a set of 4, and NGK retailing cable at £5/m...

I guess all you'd need is cable, ends, and a good crimper

Cripes! From memory; the caps had a fixed screw that one just screwed the lead in/onto. Very easy to do if one can still get them like that.

that does sound familiar thinking back to lawnmower engines which had a plastic spark plug cap.
on the inside of the hole where the cable goes, sits about 10mm of the sharp end of a screw, so you push the wire in, and twist the cap and it screws on.

I'm not sure where you can buy them in the UK, but you can get kits where you cut them to length and crimp the ends on. I have a V8 kit in the garage somewhere, bought it from a car show if I remember. The ends are thin pressed steel, with a rubber boot for the dizzy and plug cap. Just have to remember to slip the rubber boot on before you crimp them.....

They have NGK wire & caps in the Hein Gericke (UK) catalouge.

Whilst £120 is expensive in isolation. Are you really that good at making things that have to hold 40K volts, that you can forgoe all the warranty and fit-and-forget practicality?

It is not rocket science to make a plug lead up. I have seen ordinary 16swg electrical wire used for HT leads, and though not the optimum material it still works.


Yes, 40k is high voltage, you can hold a spark plug in your hand and all it does is make your nuts twitch a little.

Warranty? Fit and forget? Really......
