On another forum I post on (easily findable), someone has had a retractable number plate fitted* - it's of this type:

Link 1 - Link 2

Is that legal if the number plate is parked away when the car's on a public road - as I'd've thought that the car would always need to have it on display?

The car in question has passed it's MOT.

* Apologies if the owner of that car on the other forum sees this and takes exception as I'm just intrigued....

I can imagine it's legal as long as you don't park or drive on a public road whilst it's in the retracted position.

TBH the only reason i can see you wanting to do this is if you take lots of pictures of your car or you go to track days alot in it... not much point for public use...

I think the biker's PCJ was a little more involved.

But if you were ever caught with the plate stowed on the road you'd be in far more trouble than if you simply 'lost it' and hadn't realised, or it 'fell off' and you had it behind the windscreen in pieces.

So I cannot see any point in it, at best.

I always wondered with these things, unless it had a physical wire for you to pull would you ever feel 100% confident that the electric motor to retract it hadnt failed as you passed through the gatso at 100mph? If youre not intending to speed through a gatso youve seen why bother with the plate? Also if you go through a gatso at 100mph that you didnt notice you wouldnt have had time to retract the number plate anyway unless you drove about with it retracted all the time, in which case youd be better off just not having a plate in the first place as you could at least argue that it "must have fallen off" in that case.

Yep far better I'd think to simply not have one and use the "Damnit it's fallen off again. Thats 3 the dealers fitted to it this year..." excuse.

How many GATSO's do you know of that take a picture of the front of your car?
I was assuming youd have a retracable plate on the rear, plus gatso take pictures of the fronts of cars all the time, theyre just not type approved so the pictures cant be used in court. Truvelos do take pictures of the front though.

GATSO's maybe not, but practically all the cameras in Northamptonshire seem to be forward facing Truvelo jobbies.

If a UK car (and not US), this particular one would get traced by the Police anyway. Dear PNC - How many yellow Corvettes are there in a 20 mile radius?

What if it retracted electically, but was wired into the handbrake switch, so you have to have the hand brake on, ie stopped, to get it to retract?

Then you could use relays so that when you released the hand brake off, it would automatically come back out. So you didnt forget to put it out.

Ultimitly its a bit pointless, if you got caught using it on the road you would most likely face more hassle than the crime you were trying to get away with. And you could only use it when your parked on your drive/at a show.
