Hi folks. I'm in somewhat of a dilemma here. I went on a 4x4 tuition course at the weekend and I loved it so much I'm looking for a cheap off-roader for pay and play days. The problem seems to be insurance on a £700 Disco is £550 TPFT! (5k miles ayear, SDP only, decent post code). This is due to me have 0 no claims for this policy (my NCB is applied to my daily driver)...

So, how do those of you with 2nd cars deal with this problem? Can you get some kind of "free" NCB discount from insurers based on your good history, or do i really have to start over again? If so, it porbably takes this second car thing out of my affordability at the moment.

When i first insured another car i stuck with the same broker (adrian flux) and was allowed to have a % of my NCB from my main policy applied to the other policy (my track car)in the first year and then build up seperate NCB on the other policy hence i have a policy with 9yrs and another seperate policy with 2yrs entitlement although since im down to one car at the moment its not being used. The problem i face is if i dont renwew soon then i will lose the NCB i have accumilated on the seperate policy and be back to the same position you are in.

Admiral do multi-car policies.

I never understood the old regime of only applying NCB to one car; it's not as if you can drive two at the same time!

I've tried Flux but online quoting was down. Would you recommend any in particular for occassional use cars?

Admiral do but we've got both our cars on single policies instead of multicar as it was more. Couldn't work out why and they couldn't either??!!

Some companies do mirror the NCB, Aviva does it but not for the full NCB...

Hey op, if I'm reading yur post correctly your looking to use the 4x4 for offroad use etc unfortunately admirals multicar policy wouldn't cover this. Best to find a specialist who will cover you on and off road.
Generally a promise to bring a second car to an insurer can sometimes secure a "mirrored" ncb, best to call specialists and see what they can offer!

The whole insurance companies insuring you offroad is crap. If your at a pay and play site its like a track day so your not covered but a "green lane" is legal public higway so would be under normal insurance no different to the M25

I haven't done it myself (yet) but there are plenty of ads in Land Rover owner mags.
It might also be worth signing up to a Land Rover forum & seeing what they can recommend.

You arent the only one i had the same problem. Definitely cheaper to insure bith seperately admirals multi car is as far as im concerned a scam along the same lines of this new 2months insurance free thing one of these insurers is promoting.

I had this same conversation with Admiral last year. When I asked what was in it for us, the customers, to take a multicar policy over the seperate policies at the same price, the girl on the end of the phone couldn't even muster an automated response off of a laminated FAQ sheet...

We saved a not inconsiderable amount of money using a multi car compared to insuring 2 cars individually.

Try Heritage Insurance 0121 246-6060 and ask for Martin or Tim. They are a specialist broker who do 4x4 schemes that don't rate on NCB (similar to a classic policy).

They also do 'genuine' multi vehicle or family fleet policies. This isn't always cheaper than doing 2 cars seperately as it's based on a 'more cars than drivers' principle, but they do have access to specific insurers and do know what they are talking about.

Sky insurance got me a two year NCB on my second car when I first insured it,which I still have after renewing it recently. Give them a call, they're quite helpful especially with unusual vehicles.

I insured a Hilux surf a couple of years ago with a specialist , as the above post , 4x4 only with no NCB scheme for less than £250 F/C . I think the policy was provided by a company called Sureterm .

I can't disagree having just read the policy wording on some new business quotes we have had, £5k to insure you but you won't have a leg to stand on if someone tries to claim type wording.
