While trawling through the ads and looking at certain cars I find myself wondering how a person is going to manage to sell a car in that colour with that spec and at a price which is on par with similar cars with better spec. Ive seen green and purple Mercs and Beemers being advertised for ages with the seller not getting any intrest.

It could just be me but when I look for a BM or Merc etc I want a few toys with it

I mean what sort of hit does the first owner take on a lower spec car in a undesirable colour? and have you guys seen any of these cars.

P.S Dont mean to offend anyone or their car just curious

There is a Jaguar X-type at work with a V6 petrol engine and base-spec (I think) everything else. No idea how they are going to sell it.

the 2.0 v6 or 2.5 v6 (3.0 v6).. I think the 2.0 v6 was bottom spec anyways..

I remember looking up Alfa 156's on Autotrader to get an idea of pricing and seeing a beige one with cloth seats, no A/C and steel wheels...

What a waste.

I remember back in school had a mate whose dad was insistent on buying a BRAND NEW Merc, not 1 month old, not 6 months old - brand new.

Ended up settling on bottom spec C180 which iirc didn't even have a stereo as it was a cost option!!

I saw a brand new £23k A3 convertible in an Audi garage today. The seats were made of some sort of nasty looking and feeling cloth thing.

Who is going to buy an A3 for that much without leather!

Some people actually prefer cloth to leather.

And i think the A3 Convertible is rather ugly at the back, with the tiny bit of the booth that extends out.

I agree, it's hideous! Would have thought the cloth would make it more difficult for Audi to sell though.

Totally.

Elise S1's with cloth seats are far more comfortable (better padded!) - but bizarrely they are not well liked. My guess is that few people realise they are actually better.

No iPod connection.... No heated seats... No toastie machine in the glove box... etc

It was so basic, I almost bought it! wink

My neighbour from from a few years back had a Green Nissan Almera SALOON.
The worst Nissan, in the worst shape, in the worst colour!
Had to be the least desirable car/spec ever. I wonder if they ever sold it for more than a fiver...

i dont think there is anything wrong with having a basic car as long as people are realistic about what it will do to resale value/saleability.

Generally speaking a basic car should be advertised for less money to make it sell quickly, but owners of top spec cars are just as bad: when you tick every conceivable option when ordering a car it is going to depreciate QUICKER, because a £500 option will not mean the car is worth £500 more than a similar car missing that optional extra when you go to sell it 3 years down the line.

Any Alfa Romeo fitted with an automatic gearbox - anyone who specified that for anything other than medical reasons needs their head examining.

When you factor in the massive price of extras on a "prestige" car there's plently of scope for selling a basic spec car cheaper than most without coming out worse off.

The real killer is buying a car in a silly colour. No amount of extras will make joe Public buy a car he hates to look at. Anyone fancy a red Mercedes?....

It's quite amusing to see how the passing tastes of previous decades struggle in modern times.

The Mercedes-Benz W124-series coupes usually hold their values very well indeed on account of their superb build quality and GT ability.

However, plenty of '80s yuppies ordered them in the kind of red only supercars can carry off.

Those are the ones you'll see for £600...

There seem to be quite a lot of cars around like this, I think the worst I saw was an E39 in metallic green with green cloth and wood trim, although I've just seen an ad for a Royal Mail red C class with a horrid beigey-brown interior which I guess will be sitting around for quite some time....

but i still bet you'd swap for a silver one if the chance came up!

I have a bad feeling about some colours, BMWs Phoenix yellow was just a bit too fashionable for a year, and, as fashions change, there will be hit hard.
Also that metallic brown which seems to be popular, i can't see that standing the test of time
