I am looking for a car that I can take on track that wouldn't cost the earth to maintain, won't be a nightmare to repair if I come off, and is RELIABLE. A new Clio 200 seemed to fit the bill.
Am going to let my parents use the car most of the time as their 205GTI is on its last legs, with me borrowing it for trackdays.
I was just about to place order when we got talking about S2000s, and I realised that they came with stability control from 2006 ish onwards, and can be bought for the same price as a new Clio.

Which one should I go for, or is there another alternative that I am missing?

I would have the s2k over that clio any day... unless it was the clio v6!

Check out insurance quotes first, the honda s2k is in quite a high group.

The honda would be more fun round the track being rwd.

S2000 defo due to it being a better track day car, looking better and having Honda rather than Renault build quality also got an 8000+ RPM VVT engine, and rear wheel drive. A no brainer!

also it will hold it's value better than the clio will when you come to sell it

A new car and using it on track days which you think you will crash and to you isn't costly? Gee, would love to have these sorts of funds?

Wouldn't it be better to just get them a nicer less powerful car and something dedicated for track use?

I don't have any space in the garage so was going to leave the car with them. Was hoping to get one car that would serve both roles.

Was thinking about the Civic

http://www.litchfieldimports.co.uk/stocklist.asp?i...

but would be worried about getting parts, and an extended warranty - I think you can get extended warranty for at least 8 years with S2000

Caterham was tempting, but the plan is to buy something less extreme, and if I really enjoy it, and do it frequently enough, to get something more dedicated at some point in the future.

Or you could just get an E46 M3 which is leagues better than both.

I have a feeling that they would cost a fortune to maintain. Could be wrong

Prices have softened to such an extent you could build a maintenance slush fund into your budget.

Not sure. I started looking at them after driving the Mugen Civic, and loving the engine. That also makes around 240bhp.

Why not get an elise variant? Very easy on consumables. With added benefit that if you buy smart you wouldn't lose a lot of money when you need ti sell it

OPs parents may not be keen on an Elise, I know mine wouldn't be!

Personally I think OP is trying to tick too many boxes with one car.

Clearly you are merely 'fronting' the insurance. wink

But you have to be different, dont you.... smile

Would a S2000 really be a better track car? I always thought the fast Clios' would be brilliant on a track. And, tbh, the latest Clio revs to 8000rpm and beyond I believe?
