WTF? WHat were they for the other 37% of journeys?

I'd be interested to know how the other 37% travelled

ETA Damn, beaten to it.

The BBC really is a joke these days, as the above meaningless statement and the comment about "the fraily of older drivers" illustrate.

For the rest of the hard-of-thinking contributing to this thread, that'll be other forms of transport then; buses, trains, skateboards etc.

The reason for all the young deaths on our roads is because of the choice of vehicle.

I believe its the old people CAUSING the accident which the Young person then gets blamed for due to being a (pick one or all) Chav, Young, Going to fast, can't drive, not enough experience. smile

Yes, cause the actual quote is:

bbc said:
63% of journeys by over-70s are by car, either as a driver or passenger

OK. That was a crap piece of journalism.

BUT

Studies have found time and time again that statistically oldsters are safer than youngsters behind the wheel. They've adjusted it per mile driven etc and it's STILL true.

There is a myth that old ditherers cause prangs - and some probably do - but, statistically speaking, it's youngsters that actually cause more.

Just because we can all point at a young driver that's never had a prang and is careful and responsible at all times does not mean that the above is not true - anecdotal evidence does not compete with solid stats.

In the past I've even dug out the charts. This time I can't be bothered.

But anyone hotly denying the truth is deluding themselves. Dooooooo-lal. Sorry.

Drive around Clacton and tell me that again!

I should imagine the elderly have far more prangs but don't actually realise it.......

I see a lot of bad driving in the mornings, this would be from the younger generations on the way to work or skool runs. The amount that just head for the MLM on the motorways without looking and staying there for no reason is shocking. Re test everyone would be a better idea.

But it's like saying:
Drowning to death is less painful than getting stabbed and dying cold and alone in a ditch.

Young drivers are bad because they don't have experience of driving and life. Then those young drivers get better, this is good. Then those young drivers who previously got better start to get worse... I don't think they are getting worse because of an excess of experience are they.

I suspect that this may be derived more from the cost of their accidents more than the frequency.
They drive so slowly that not much damage is caused when they have a bump, many minor bumps don't even get recorded.
They do cause accidents by inciting impatience in other road users!

Retests at 70, then every 5 years after that! yes

I may change my mind about this in 20 years time!
