I've just read this story on the BBC and I can't quite believe it. This Consumer Reports group seems to think if a car's back end steps out, it will then topple over and kill all the occupants.

Their tests didn't even make it topple over, they just got the back end out. Here's the quote;

"When pushed to its limits on our track's handling course, the rear of the GX we bought slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control," it said.

"We believe that in real-world driving, that situation could lead to a rollover accident, which could cause serious injury or death."

Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

I am more shocked that Americans tested the car on something with corners.

So they deliberately put the car in a slide and the electronics did manage to rescue the situation and this is a fault because it didn't do it quick enough?

They could also have said - we loosened the wheel nuts and then took the car for a drive and the wheels fell off. The devil worshipping Toyota brand must recall every car they ever built so we, erm I mean GM, can sell more cars...

It must be market protectionism, because of course Corvettes have been doing this for centuries. smile

Exactly. What is most difficult to believe is that Toyota actually decided to stop selling cars. They really need some PR people with balls in the US.

Exactly - their response should have been: "fk OFF YOU MUPPETS", but now they've given credibility to the situation.

Idiots.

Breaking News! Some American Consumer Slime Pot decries safety on all cars that are not made in the US. Spokesperson ttus Beefsteak was quoted as saying "All these cars are unamerican and not for our market. They are unsafe and should all be destroyed".

When asked about things like fuel economy, emissions and dust to dust costs he looked at the reported with a bloodshot eye and say "What's that be? Sounds like Communism! Are you a commie?".

They've obviously not driven any of the Merc 4x4's then! Some of which are truly shocking & yes thats the newer ones...

However ASC & DSC can do the job of looking after you much better than the average muppet behind the wheel. Just because something slides does'nt mean it'll fall over though rolleyes

Because that would be toyotas fault right? You may enjoy getting the back end of your car to slide out, but the average driver doesn't. You can turn traction control off if you want to have fun. Presumably, Lexus market the car as having stability control - if it doesn't work correctly, then it needs fixing. With US litigation, I am not surprised Lexus have stopped selling them. As soon as they are aware there "might" be a problem, they need to be seen to be reacting responsibly.

And then a family of four get killed when their Lexus rolls over after the back end slid out. Regardless of the fact the driver is driving like a dick, the press is then full of stories of "We told them there was a problem and Toyota told us to fk off".

Don't get me wrong, Toyota have been royally screwed by the press, probably with protectionism in mind. But Toyota are doing the right thing IMO.

I'd agree Toyota are being screwed by the press, can't see the Youtube but I get the impression that the consumer people are relying on the stability system on its own to rescue rather than allowing the driver to drive the thing, dare I say it? "Apply a dab of oppo you berks!!!!" hehe

This sounds to me like another case of:-

Lynn Faulds Woodentop: So Mr Manufacturer, we discovered that your equipemnt can electrocute a toddler.
Manufacturer, Our equipment exceeds all recognised safety standards.
Lynn Faulds Woodentop: But a toddler could drag a six foot ladder into place, climb on top of the machine whilst carrying this specially and peculiarly shaped piece of metal, undo eight bolts with security locking heads, remove an access panel, operate a digital coded lock and then poke the piece of metal round several corners onto a live contact whilst simultaneously depressing an electric cut out switch 12 feet away.
Manufacturer: That's an extreme scenario and quite impossible in our opinion.
Lynn Faulds Woodentop: You so sit there and blatantly admit your machine is a death trap.

assuming they haven't fked around with it like that university professor did with his demo on the news, then that doesn't look right. I bet a lot of people would be destroying lampposts with that move. Stability control isn't doing it's job there surely?!

Yeah, I've since changed my mind on that, wasn't really looking at what they were doing to provoke it before. Found this;

"The magazine said the Lexus problem occurred during tests on its track. In a standard test, the driver approached a turn unusually fast, then released the accelerator pedal to simulate the response of an alarmed driver. This caused the rear of the vehicle to slide outward.

In normal cases, the electronic stability control should quickly correct the loss of control and keep the SUV on its intended path. But with the GX 460, the stability control took too long to adjust, which could cause a rollover accident if one of the sliding wheels were to strike the curb or another obstacle, said Gabriel Shenhar, Consumer Reports' senior auto test engineer who was one of four testers who experienced the problem.

The magazine said it is not aware of any reports of the GX 460 rolling over. It tested two separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither rolled over."

I think I have to disagree. Even given the circumstances surrounding Toyota, driving any car to its limits is going to push the back end out. That's what they should have said, not backed down and basically said "Look, we've produced more unsafe cars".
