Usual stupid comments on the BBC news website: "I was worried it would catch on fire if fuel was leaking." Why would it suddenly catch fire just because it's upside down?

Deary me...

LOL I was in a car that turned over, well around and then over and we ended up in a ditch I checked everyone was ok, I wasn't the driver, we were all fine.............. but we were in a ditch so three of the doors were jammed shut and windows obscurred the only remaining door was beside me. I tried to kick the window out and it wouldn't shift but then some idiot on the road above said "keep away, it's going to blow" ......... cue mass panic from us in the car, not what we needed.

Funniest bit was when the driver took his seat belt off, we weren't wearing them in the back, which had been suspending him mid air and fell on his head. Even though I thought I was about to die I really laughed out loud biggrin

Talking to the policeman when we did all get out I made a comment that it wasn't going to blow we had hardly any petrol left, he said that's just when they are likely to go up.

Lovely Cortina but looking at the wreck when it was low loaded back I don't know how we got out.

I think alot of people genuinely do think cars set on fire after seconds when upside down due to that game.

?!! how do fumes become more likely to explode if you turn them upside down?

FWIW I was in exactly the same situ as you, even down to the belt release bit, the windscreen had collapsed so that wasn't a way out and the door mechanism was buggered after it had scraped down the road on its side....the driver was rigid with shock, the guy in the back was paralytic and all I could hear was tsss, tsss, tsss as something dripped on the hot exhaust, stting it muchly I was

I assume he meant petrol vapour is more likely to explode than lots of liquid petrol.

Having said that you'd be pretty unlucky to even set fire to the car by flipping it, let alone actually having it explode.

He said that fumes were more likely to ignite than fuel??? Didn't think to question him. More annoyed at him checking my tyre wear (was my car) and tax disc!

We were all stone cold sober and I, the only female in the car, ended up with the only facial injury!!! oh and had to get a bus back home from Slough!!! Was not a great evening!

A friend of mine died in an accident identical to this one, the ditch was full of water and he was trapped in the car. A very horrible way to.

That doesn't even bear thinking about, I was very lucky, sorry to hear about your friend.

I was only 16 and I have to say that episode changed my outlook and my future life.

Fuel vapour is much more combustible than a full tank. There's not enough oxygen in a full tank to enable combustion (think of the fire triangle: fuel - oxygen- heat). Vapour, mixing freely with lots of air, tends to go up with a very big bang when a source of heat is introduced to complete the triangle.

what he said.
empty fuel tanks are nice and volatile and cause a bigge bang than the full ones. much bigger bang

That's probably what I should have done with mine then, the piece of st never used to run properly when it was on it's wheels!
