'Premium' cars with LED daytime running lights

Eeek, why are more 'Premium' cars putting tacky LED daytime running lights on. The Audi R8 was kind of cool (IMO) as it was the first time I'd seen them. Now I see more and more higher end cars (new 911, E-Class etc) with them on and I chuckle to myself everytime I see them switched on. You get some from Halfrauds for £15 and to be honest they look exactly the same as the high end stuff...when will manufacturers realise they look shabba? It's really not worth releasing a 'facelift' model just to put some LED's in (X5!).

I know I'm not on my own in not liking them.....but does anyone like them?

I like them and DRLs are going to become law anyhow. May as well have LED ones that consume less power and match the colour temperature of xenons.

I think they are becoming a legal requirement for all new cars from 2011. I guess you'll have to get used to them!!!

DRL's are to become mandatory. But that's not really the issue. They don't have to be wker lights.

There was an audi driving round with high beam looking lights on in the middle of the day today. Then it got closer and i realised it was just another car with crooked led drl's. Hopefully they will all start failing mot's on them and the madness will stop.

Whats the definition of wker lights? If you buy a car and they are fitted whether you like it or not, how is that a reflection on the driver? Its like criticising someone for having brake lights!!

As from next year, if you buy a new car you'll have "wker lights" fitted, does that automatically make you a wker?!

A quick search on wiki and "DRLs called for at least 200 candelas straight ahead, and no more than 800 candelas in any direction".

So what candelas are bog standard 'side lights' on the average car? Could you drive with them on all day instead of the dedicated DRL's?

Lots of cars already have them, and they aren't wker lights. Compare the DRL's of say a BMW, a Ford, a Saab, a Volvo, or a Porsche with say those on an Audi, and you have your answer.

Well if the dealer can turn them off and you choose to leave them on, then yes.

I didnt know you could turn them off! Kind of makes the legislation rather pointless doesnt it?!!

This is the best pic I could get.. The DRL's surround the entire headlamp enclosure!

I normally dont mind DRL's, but this is the first time it's actually affected me.

I think the point is whether they simply say 'Look out for me' or scream 'Look at me'. Most of them are in the spirit of the legislation in terms of improving visibility to other road users and hence road safety, but there are those who are just using it to appeal to attention wes, and they are certainly an irritating and annoying distraction to many. There is no need to have Blackpool pleasure beach on the front of the car.

the new A8 is ruined by the headlights

In the late 70' early 80'sy dad had a sucession of Volvo's all with day lights. We used to get flashed by other drivers everyday!

Last week I was in a the new shape 2010 Mercedes E350 complete with LED DRL's. Still got flashed by other drivers pointing to the lights!
