A friend of mine has offered me a good price for the 540i and I'm seriously considering it. But what should i buy to replace it? I'll have at the most 4.5k to spend.

So really, its a what car, i'm not bothered about fuel consumption, running costs, insurance or how many seats it has. Any suggestions welcome thumbup

A few thoughts i have...

'kin ell man that's an eclectic selection smile

After the waftyness of the 540 I would be tempted to have a blast in something a bit less bloaty.

That M3 looks likes fun. It may even retain it's value if kept in good nick.

That 740 looks like it has a ASC fault as the associated lights are on - or the battery could have gone flat

I would take E55. Relatively modern, relaxed, reliable and fast.

560SEL! Cooler than polar bear poo.
Surely the 740 will be too similar to your last 5 series?

Even more leftfield? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010... ?

I've always fancied trying an M3, or maybe one of these...

I would be looking at:

E55 AMG
Jag XJR (4.2 supercharged)
Jag S-Type R (4.2 supercharged)

E55 or XJR depending on whichever was in better condition for the money. If condition is not an isse, then the XJR.

I don't know about specifics of the other cars you've listed, but an S-reg 1998 XJR with over 100k miles has got big bills written all over it to me. Those X300/308s just don't seem to make the 120k+ miles that the Germans do.

I thought about a 750, but I'm not sure whether I'd get a half decent one for 4.5k scratchchin
