I have a 987 Boxster, all brought and paid for. Lovely car, had it from new and can't fault it except sometimes you get that itch to change for changes sake.

That's fine except there's absolutely nothing out there that I can think of that I'd change it for without spending a ton of cash and it still wouldn't, IMO, see me in anything better - certainly not newer, possibly quicker but the Boxster is quick enough for what I need.

I've been looking for a cheap land rover Defender as a second vehicle/bit of fun and it's seeming impossible so I'm thinking perhaps go mad and just buy a decent newer one and split between the two.

Ever find yourself driving something a little too good a little too early?

I drive a 200bhp Mk2 Golf everyday, it handles, steers & its quick. But I fancy something newer, every car I look at seems to fall short of the Golf's driving experience.

I have that change it itch, but have no options for a different reason... complete lack of funds.

I desperatly want a new car as mine I bought in desperation as time was running out and i desperatly needed transport.. and unfortuantly that is all it provides... transport.

At the moment, every penny I earn is going towards a masters degree that I am starting later this year, so when thats finished (2 and a half years) I will be able to re focus my cash flow into a new car. Thats a long time with the "change it itch"

If anyone is giving away a fun, reliable car please contact me.

yep, a change would have to involve a car probably 5x the ammount i paid for the current car or down a different route, ie to a muscle car

I get the itch all the time and to be honest I'm now seriously thinking about changing my M3 for something else because I could really do with releasing a bit of cash but everytime I drive it I fall in love again. I've had it two years now and still look admiringly at it from across a car park!

I think there is nearly always something else, but you have to be prepared that it will be different, but then isn't that the point?

As for the Defender, if you don't need to tow of haul loads of stuff then maybe look at a Jeep Wrangler. Very similar to a Defender, similar width and length, 93" wheelbase compared to 92.9" wheelbase. Live axles, coil suspension, great off road.

Only real differences are, you'll get a Wrangler cheaper. They have a grunty 4.0 litre straight 6 (should offer 18-22mpg compared to a modded diesel Defender of 21-25mpg), faster and more powerful. Auto or manual, more options list, better rear seats and a removable roof.

This one's sold but 2006, 12,000 miles and good spec.

I reckon its a pretty common itch with Petrol heads smile

I've had this recently, have been driving my MR2 turbo for around 4 years and love the combination of mid engine balance, RWD, reasonable power and day-day practicality.

However I felt like it was time for something different, i've recently bought a house so finding it hard to spend much time working on the car so something newer was desirable yet I didnt want to compromise on fun.

Test drove the obvious stuff; 350Z, S2000 and even looked at the 370Z but in the end i've ordered a new Renaultsport Clio 200. So sometimes it pays to look a little left-field from what you'd initialy expect!

I want a nice range rover or land rover biggrin

Not to replace anything though, quite happy with the current fleet.

yup, got it now.

had a 5dr 123d for nearly 12 months and im dying to get something quicker.

but fuel, tax and general running costs are stopping me getting what i want. (at least 300bhp and practicality)

looks like a remap will have to do then for the near future.

All the time, but mostly the extra power/etc doesn't prove worth the cost.

Also dealers are completely uninterested in selling cars at the moment.

how much practicality and what sort of mpg?

Or is it speed?

My MX-5 is "properly sorted" in my opinion. Lowered, Geo done by WiM and as such it handles just brilliantly.
I've had it for 7 months and that is usually when my "change it" itch kicks in (6 to 9 months usually) and as such I've been looking around for options to replace it. Nothing does the same or better for similar money. A Boxster S is probably the favourite but I'd want a 987 and they're 17k!

Yep same here. E65 730d, quick, fast, 35mpg+, shrinks around you when pressing on, dead comfy and more gadgets than a Roger Moore 007 film. The only thing that comes close for me is a new F01 7 Series, which would cost me about 50k, approx £47k more than I can muster right now.

The i know from personal experience that the 123d is a real sod to be itchy with, because
- mapped it's 250bhp, 6.1s (ish), around 180bhp/tonne
- does 45-48mpg without trying
- RWD

I've had the "itch" for the last years, guess thats why I'm on car no 41 since 1990.
or
I've recently changed jobs and work in London, so the 55 plate passat diesel I bought last year for economy reasons now seems a bit pointless, so the itch is growing, but not sure what to get next - either a RR or something with a big motor - old M3 or similar

Same as many people though, funds prevent me getting something nice, so unless I can find a good swap deal I'm a bit stuffed at the moment
