Driving back from a great weekend at Croft last night I was very surprised.

On the M62 between Ferry Bridge and the M18.
I'm in the inside lane and gaining on the lorry in front.
I'm keeping my eye on the mirrors.
I see a pair of headlight gaining on me so I'm thinking about easing off to let them pass before I need to pull out to pass the lorry.
As they go passed I noticed that they had pull into lane three therefore allowing me to pull out into lane two without slowing.

I know I shouldn't be surprised because we should all drive with consideration for others but sadly we don't see that to often.

So, thanks to who ever was driving that car.

I always try to do that tbh.

It's not hard to see that maybe a car you are gaining on is gaining on something itself. I just give that car a couple of flashes and move into L3. Everyone is happy.

I see where you're coming from though. On the whole, there is way too little observation or consideration for others out there.

something strange happened to me at a motorway service station but I don't really want to talk about it.

As mentioned, its nice to see someone able to read the road ahead, and consider you might be pulling out biggrin

I completely agree, always get a nice warm fuzzy feeling (not disimilar to that of dangerousmike at the services !!) when someone does this or suchlike

I always try and do the same but most people don't read the situation (again always nice when they do and acknowledge you)

Thought you was going to say he went back into lane 2 and tried to ram you off or something. Good to see a bit of consideration though.

Perfectly normal behaviour for me, indicators are for surprises not for the bleedin obvious!

laugh

I saw something strange in a service station on the M3 once which made me look twice. I don't want to talk about it either, or even remember it.

yes Seems fairly normal for me. It's pretty obvious what most drivers are going to do next. I admit though, the OP's got a point - most drivers leave their brains at home biggrin

Me too. It's good when people notice and take advantage!

yes

op- if you were quite far from the lorry then was considerate, if very close than defensive driving ie incase you suddenly pullout. Normal behavious I would do, my OH on the other hand....

I would think most of us on here would have done the same or similar under the circumstances - we drive 'aware' of what we would want to happen if we were in that position. Perfectly sensible manouvre.
Shame we are but 0.01 % of the motoring public, it's all the others that seem to drive like twonks....

Something that's always amazes me is when in this situation you are indicating and there's enough room to at least get alongside the lorry in front, the guy behind doesn't react at all until you actually start moving out, even if you're indicating for a good few seconds before moving. It's as if people just ignore indications completely.

If I see that someone may need to pull out to overtake a slower car in L1, and I'm travelling in L2, I'll always move out if L3 is clear - makes the motorway flow better!

Surprised it doesn't happen very often though - inconsiderate other drivers.

Used to occur much more regularly when I started driving in the 70s.

I still do it but hardly ever have another move over for me.

Suppose higher volumes of traffic make it a bit less practical.

I do it. smile

I tend to find that others that I see do it tend to be travelling at 85+, and thus are paying more attention, whereas those that just bimble along would sit on your rear quarter completely oblivious to the fact you are going to need to pull out, and then ignoring your indicator forcing you to slow down to pull out behind them.

I do this as well with a flash of headlights smile

It's just good manners and helps the flow. I tend to find that this system is fully used and appreciated by the 'professional drivers' making progress. Say what you want about the Jonny/Jenny-reps in their TDI's, they play by these rules on the M25 pretty well.

Sounds weird but I like it when you read all the closing speeds better than the car in L1 and actually create the space in L2 by moving into L3 just before they even know what they are going to do. That sometimes gets you a thank you wave and a smile as well!

What really annoys me is when on a two lane dual carriage way, I slow to allow someone pull out to let them overtake the slower vehicle and they refuse to move out despite my placement, flashing lights etc! Means everybody gets annoyed!
