I bought a Merc CLS a while ago, which turned out to be a complete nail. After a month or so of wrangling with MB, they've agreed to take it back and I'm now ready to buy something to replace it. I'm not in a hurry so I can take my time for the right car to come along. They did offer to swap it for an ML, but it was a couple of years older and had double the mileage on it, so no thanks.

The CLS (when it did work) was nice for motorways, but a little uninvolving over a/b roads. Maybe looking for something a bit more driver-orientated this time, maybe smaller as well. I don't have a need for anything that big.

That's my only real criteria. I've got around £24k to play with, but take £5k off that for insurance / tax and a years(ish) fuel and probably a bit left for something else.

The newer the better, and obviously the lower the mileage the better.

Cheers chaps.

With 19K to play with we really need a few criteria as to what you need.... there are just so many to choose from.

You could go for anyone of these,

What do you want from a car?

For me it would be narrowed down to C-class/159 or maybe even 3-series.
C-class could be gotten very tidy with AMG kit imho.

You will lose out a bit on rear legroom, but not that much on boot space (could get an estate, they are even more good looking).

For your budget you got a lot room to play with, low milage, lots of kit. I'd even advise a C320 (if you are going for the diesel?), very very accomplished engine.

That's what I don't know. Before I thought I fancied something bargeiferous. Turns out I didn't really, although my view may have been tainted by the problems.

I'd like something that won't depreciate too much, waftworthy on the motorway, but handy on the back roads. Ideally 4/5 door.

6 Series BMW? Okay, it'll be an older model but they're nice enough to drive.

Edit - i see you want 4/5 doors, forget it.

Oh yes.

£19K *might* just get an LCI (facelift) 2007 model (the one with the joystick gearstick) There was one on BMW AUC for £19K with all the toys - it had 60K miles, but it was a bargain.

Its 286BHP as standard and has a much nicer gearbox.

Hmmm...fairly tempted by something like this - http://pistonheads.com/sales/1575966.htm

ETA : What about a nicely specced 1 series? They seem to have had much praise on here.

A sensible if less obvious answer would be something like a Mustan GT with uprated suspension, brakes and a nice burbly exhaust. smile

If only they put the steering wheel on the correct side, i'd be defending this suggestion 100%, in spite of it being just a touch predictable smile

No, no it isn't. Unless you like driving something with less technology than mid-80's Sherpa V8 ambulance.

Begs the question why you were in the Mercedes dealership to start with - their cars are not exactly renowned for driver involvement.

Sounds as though as short walk down the road to talk to Mr BMW's shop is called for IMO.

Maybe he was looking for a pretty car? hehe

Like I said, a C-class with the AMG suspension does a lot for the car.
