On the way home some guy in a van selects reverse at this T junction and hits the front of my car, leaving some minor paint damage. He says sorry etc and we swap details. His insurance compnay have just called me and asked if I would like to deal direct with them. This doesn't sound so bad to me as they will agree to a bodyshop of my choice and provide a hire car and everything can be sorted a lot quicker as their guy has admitted full liability.

Couple of questions regarding this ..

1, Do i have to inform my insurance company
2, If I deal with his insurance company, when i next get car insurance and they say 'any accident claims or convictions in the past 5 years' would I have to inform them of this and would it be on some insurance database

Thanks

2. You can't avoid this by not dealing with his insurance company on the claim. You will already be on the database.

Hmmm, just spoke with my insurance company and they said there is no obligation to tell them if I wish to deal with his insurance company direct. It also wouldn't appear on a database as a claim, as I have made no claim, so no need to tell them of any accident when getting an isnurance quote with any company.

Just be very careful to read the small print when you get a quote next.

Especially because what they've told him is bks, and all the insurance companies ask "have you had and accidents or claims in the last 5 years?" the answer to which is yes.

Edit; you certainly are under no obligation to tell them, providing you're happy that they will be under no obligation to honour your cover

As the above have said... when your renewal comes up make sure you tell them you have had a non fault accident. The alternative could be a lot worse!
